[UNIT Autopsy lab]
(On the sealed-off observation balcony.)
KATE: What have we got?
BANGURA: Some sort of viral infection. It's like the gills get blocked. I'd say, they shed scales like we shed skin, but the shedding has stopped, which means the excess scales build up and they drown.
SHIRLEY: All of them? Is this Homo Aqua or Homo Amphibia too?
BANGURA: I think it's All of them. But no other lifeforms. Only Aquakind.
KATE: What about us, are we safe?
BANGURA: That's the strangest thing.
(Doctor Bangura starts to remove her breathing apparatus.)
KATE: Careful.
BANGURA: There's no danger. Not any more. It's like I'm finding the aftermath of a virus without the virus itself, which means...
KATE: A virus that's been designed. That's front line warfare. Viruses programmed to strike and then decay, that's... Oh, for God's sake. That's human technology.
SHIRLEY: It was us.
KATE: I didn't see it happening. Severance.
Severance was The Virus.
BANGURA: What are your people saying? What's the level of contagion out there?
HART: Er, 90 percent on first evidence. A 90 percent death rate worldwide.
SHIRLEY: We think Aquakind are connected by an algae network. This proves it. One virus has circled around all the oceans of the world.
BANGURA: Story of the human race. From the moment Homo sapiens learnt to walk, we meet a new species... we slaughter them.
CHESNEY [OC]: Ma'am. We've got a signal.
[Control room]
CHESNEY: It's in deep Aquanese. It's the same signal repeated over and over again. I think it's an SOS. They're calling for help.
[Hotel suite]
CHAKRI: Barclay, I'm sorry, they need you at the Empress Hall.
BARCLAY: What for?
CHAKRI: You're the Ambassador.
BARCLAY: Hana, that's gone. I'm nothing. I'm the man who's literally nothing.
CHAKRI: The request has come to revert to Day One. They say they want it as it was for the final session.
BARCLAY: Who does?
CHAKRI: Homo Amphibia.
BARCLAY: What, is it Salt? Is she alive?
CHAKRI: I don't know.
[Empress Hall]
MAN: I'm sorry, but this is a pivotal moment. I demand a seat.
BARCLAY: Do we know anything more... about the virus? How did it happen?
KATE: Nothing. We have suspicions, but we can't... we can't prove anything. Good luck.
CHAKRI: Ma'am, there is a message from Doctor Bannerjee. It says Priority One.
KATE: Not now. Stay with Barclay.
[Control room]
HART: Tank is stable and maintaining integrity. Open water lock one.
CHESNEY: We have three life forms.
KATE: Identify them.
CHESNEY: Two Homo Aqua. One Homo Amphibia.
KATE: Which one?
SHIRLEY: Is it her?
[Empress Hall]
SALT: I have come to inform mankind... the war is over. You have won. We are defeated. We grant you victory.
BARCLAY: I'm sorry.
[Control room]
KATE: Barclay, stay on message.
[Empress Hall]
BARCLAY: I'm so sorry. What happened down there? What's it like?
SALT: We are destroyed. The virus brought
Fire to the world of water. And we burnt.
BARCLAY: But you survived.
SALT: One in ten. As if by design.
BARCLAY: I didn't know. I swear I didn't know.
SALT:
No, not you. But there are others.
There are creatures in this room
who want A Prize for winning The War.
They desire our technology.
But there are oceans unknown to you,
running deep beneath the mantle of this world,
and We have sunk Our Prizes deep down below.
Lost to You. Forever.
But more than that, you had thought you had chosen your weapons well, because A Virus contains no Water.
And yet... it rides the back of a water molecule
like a parasite upon a host. And we can read every drop, stained with these fingerprints of yours.
Water will find You one day.
(Shaw has an image of himself taking a shower
then suddenly spewing out all the water in his body.
Dussolier sees herself drowning in her car, and runs out.)
BARCLAY: But... The Accord.
SALT: Will never happen.
BARCLAY: What was it?
SALT: It was a way of two species joining and sharing and celebrating, which is now lost.
[Control room]
KATE:
Barclay, the first offer, page 15.
[Empress Hall]
BARCLAY:
We can offer Help.
We would Grant You Land.
There is A Haven.
It's A Trench in The Pacific Ocean.
3,000 kilometres long,
60 kilometres wide,
and 12 kilometres deep.
The Deepest place on Earth.
This can be Your Home.
We will protect Your Boundaries
from Pollution and Sound and Viruses.
And We can rebuild Our Relationship as
Two Species on the same Earth :
We can be Friends.
SALT:
-- We will accept this offer...
IF You give This Land its True name :
A Hunting Ground.
(Images of Aquakind caught by fishermen.)
We will Live there in Full
Knowledge of What You will Do to Us.
We will Do whatever You Want ---
.....because We are terrified of You.
Thus ends The War.
BARCLAY:
No. No, no. No, there's more to say.
(Salt and her escorts go back to the Waterway airlock.)
Will I see you again?
[Control room]
KATE: Green Shoot protocols, everyone.
Congratulations. Or shame on us all. I'm not sure which.
[Empress Hall]
(Barclay slumps against the airlock. There's a creaking, cracking glass sound.)
BARCLAY: Everyone, get out!
[Control room]
KATE: Abandon the hall, everyone! Out! Out!
[Empress Hall]
MAN: It's breaking! Move! Move!
(Every man for himself in the panic, except Barclay.)
CHAKRI: Come on, let's go. Yeah?
(A reporter runs in as water starts to enter the hall.)
HUNT: Mister Dupont, anything to say?
BARCLAY: We won. How about that? Tell them we won. We won The War.
(They get out and the soldiers close the door just as the wave of water reaches it.)
[Imperial House]
SOLDIER: Move! Move, move!
KATE: I need to find somewhere to live.
SHIRLEY: I said to Lawrence, "Kate could stay with us." He said no.
KATE: Fair enough.
SHIRLEY: You've never got on.
SOLDIER: Ma'am?
KATE: No.
SHIRLEY: Oh, I keep thinking. The times when The Doctor is nowhere to be seen.
KATE: He said to me once,
"I Save The Human Race,
I don't shape The Human Race.
You can get that wrong all on your own."
SHIRLEY: Yeah.
