ORCHIDS

“Hybrids! A Crime against Nature!”

[Tuvok's quarters]
(Tuvok is tending his orchids when the doorbell rings.)

TUVOK:
Come in. Captain, this is unexpected.

JANEWAY:
I've been in your quarters before.

TUVOK:
Indeed, but so rarely that I can
remember each instance.
Vulcan spice tea, hot.
And it was always at a time when
you were particularly troubled.

JANEWAY:
Right as usual. Thank you.
Commander Chakotay has proposed that we make an alliance with one of the Kazon factions.
We wouldn't give them weapons or technology, but we would pledge to support and defend them if they're attacked.

TUVOK:
I am sure that made you uncomfortable.

JANEWAY:
How can I consider it?
I can't just walk away from the precepts Starfleet has laid our for us.

You don't deal with Outlaws.

You don't involve yourself in the political machinations of other cultures.

It goes against everything I believe, everything I trained for, everything experience has taught me.

TUVOK:
Quite right.

JANEWAY:
Do I hear a ‘however’ coming?

TUVOK:
You are perceptive, Captain.

I believe Commander Chakotay's suggestion does have merit.

JANEWAY:
Help me understand that.

TUVOK:
When I was a Young Man,
A Great Visionary named Spock recommended an alliance between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

This produced a major dispute.
The Klingons, after all, were Outlaws, employing violence and brutality in order to build their Empire.

I myself spoke out against such a coalition.

But the alliance was forged and it brought a stability to the quadrant that had not been there for two hundred years.

Spock's suggestion, so controversial at first,
proved to be the cornerstone of peace.

JANEWAY:
There are some differences here.

By allying ourselves to one faction, we'd be giving that faction more power than the others.

That would clearly affect the internal politics of all the Kazon.

TUVOK:
I understand your concern, but remember, it would only be a temporary arrangement since we are on our way out of this quadrant.

In the meantime, it might bring stability to the region and security for us.

JANEWAY:
Once we're gone they'll probably go back to their in-fighting.

TUVOK:
Perhaps. But even temporary stability can bring an appreciation for peace

This flower is a rare hybrid.

As far as I know it exists nowhere else in the galaxy.

I created it by grafting a cutting from a South American orchid onto a Vulcan favinit plant.

I doubted the graft would take,
and indeed the plant was sickly at first.

However, after a few weeks both plants adapted to their new condition and in fact became stronger than either had been alone.

Well-Disposed Towards People, Generally

Q :
Who Are You?

A :
A Friend.
Arthur Dent :
I see — anyone’s friend in particular, or are you just well-disposed towards People, generally?

Q :
WHAT ARE YOU?!?

A :
I’M BATMAN.

KIRK:
Bones -- There's A Thing out there...

McCOY:
Why is any object we don't understand always called 'A Thing'?

KIRK:
...headed this way. I Need You.
Dammit Bones, I Need you. Badly!

*****

KIRK:
Human Beings...

SPOCK:
But Captain, we both know that I am Not Human.

KIRK:
Do you want to know something?
...Everybody's Human.

SPOCK:

I find that remark ...insulting.

KIRK:

Come on, I Need You.

*****

PICARD :
Q. End this.

Q :
Moi? What makes you think I am either inclined or capable to terminate this encounter?

PICARD :
If we all die, here, now.... you will not be able to gloat..!!

You wanted to frighten us.
We're frightened.

You wanted to show us that we were inadequate.
For the moment, I grant that.

You wanted me to say that I need you.

I NEED You!

(With a snap of Q's fingers, the Enterprise goes whirling through space again)

Q:
That was a difficult admission.
Another Man would have been humiliated to say those words.
Another Man would have rather DIED than ask for Help.

“Friendship arises out of mere Companionship when two or more of the companions discover that they have in common some insight or interest or even taste which the others do not share and which, till that moment, each believed to be his own unique treasure (or burden). The typical expression of opening Friendship would be something like, “What? You too? I thought I was the only one.”

We can imagine that among those early hunters and warriors single individuals — one in a century? one in a thousand years? — saw what others did not; saw that the deer was beautiful as well as edible, that hunting was fun as well as necessary, dreamed that his gods might be not only powerful but holy.

But as long as each of these percipient persons dies without finding a kindred soul, nothing (I suspect) will come of it; art or sport or spiritual religion will not be born. It is when two such persons discover one another, when, whether with immense difficulties and semi-articulate fumblings or with what would seem to us amazing and elliptical speed, they share their vision — it is then that Friendship is born.

And instantly they stand together in an immense solitude. Lovers seek for privacy. Friends find this solitude about them, this barrier between them and the herd, whether they want it or not. They would be glad to reduce it. The first two would be glad to find a third. In our own time Friendship arises in the same way. For us of course the shared activity and therefore the companionship on which Friendship supervenes will not often be a bodily one like hunting or fighting.

It may be a common religion, common studies, a common profession, even a common recreation. All who share it will be our companions; but one or two or three who share something more will be our Friends. In this kind of love, as Emerson said, Do you love me? means Do you see the same truth? — Or at least, “Do you care about the same truth?”

The Man who agrees with us that some question, little regarded by others, is of great importance, can be our Friend. He need not agree with us about The Answer.

Notice that Friendship thus repeats on a more individual and less socially necessary level the character of the Companionship which was its matrix. The Companionship was between people who were doing something together—hunting, studying, painting or what you will. The Friends will still be doing something together, but something more inward, less widely shared and less easily defined; still hunters, but of some immaterial quarry; still collaborating, but in some work the world does not, or not yet, take account of; still travelling companions, but on a different kind of journey. Hence we picture lovers face to face but Friends side by side; their eyes look ahead

That is why those pathetic people who simply “want friends” can never make any. The very condition of having Friends is can arise — though Affection of course may. There would be nothing for the Friendship to be about; and Friendship must be about something, even if it were only an enthusiasm for dominoes or white mice.

Those who have nothing can share nothing;
those who are going nowhere can have no fellow-travellers.

 UHURA:
Captain, Starfleet reports our last six crewmembers are ready to beam up -
...but one of them is refusing to step into the transporter.

KIRK:
Oh? I'll see that he beams up!
...Transporter room.

[Enterprise transporter room]

KIRK:
Ellen.

ELLEN:

Yes sir.

KIRK:
What was the problem down there?

ELLEN:

He insisted we go first, sir.
Said something about first seeing how it scrambled our molecules.

KIRK:
That has a familiar ring, doesn't it?
Starfleet, this is Captain Kirk [NO IT ISN'T.].
Beam that officer up now!

IN ANTICIPATION OF THE SIGHT OF HIS OLD FRIEND, REAR-ADMIRAL JAMES T. KIRK HAS FORGOTTEN HIMSELF

...Well, for a man who swore he'd never return to Starfleet.

McCOY:
Just a moment, Captain, sir. I'll explain what happened.
Your revered Admiral Nogura invoked a little known, and seldom used, reserve activation clause...
...in simpler language, Captain, they drafted me!

BONES HAS NOT NOTICED/DOES NOT CARE THAT JIM IS NOW AN ADMIRAL

and Kirk Does Not Care to correct him.

KIRK:
They didn't!

McCOY:
This was your idea!
This was your idea, wasn't it?

KIRK:

Bones -- There's A Thing out there...

McCOY:

Why is any object we don't understand always called 'A Thing'?

KIRK:
...headed this way. I Need You.
Dammit Bones, I need you. Badly!

McCOY:
Permission to come aboard?

RAND (OC):

Permission granted, sir.

McCOY:
Well, Jim, I hear Chapel's an MD now.
Well, I'm gonna need a top nurse, not a Doctor who'll argue every little diagnosis with me.
And ...They've probably redesigned the whole sickbay, too.

I know engineers.
They LOVE to change things.....

The Knights of Amity

Mother of an Eaten Son :
Chief Brody?

The Chief :
Yes?

[Mrs. Kintner slaps Brody and sobs]

Mother of an Eaten Son :
I just found out - that a girl got killed here last week.
And you knew it!
You knew there was a shark out there!

You knew it was dangerous!

But you let people go swimming anyway?

You knew all those things!

But still my boy is dead now.

And there's nothing you can do about it.

My boy is dead.

I wanted you to know that.

[Mrs. Kintner walks away]

Call Me "Mayor" :
I'm sorry, Martin.
She's Wrong.

The Chief :
No, she's not.

Time to Be The Captain

"It's an old naval tradition. Whoever's in command of a ship, regardless of rank, is referred to as 'captain.' "

"You mean if I had to take command, I would be called 'captain,' too?"

"Cadet, by the time you took command, there'd be nobody left to call you anything."

- O'Brien and Nog

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Why! Bless me, Doctor!
What beams you into this neck of the woods?

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
'Beware Romulans bearing gifts.'
Happy Birthday, Jim.

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Romulan Ale!
Why, Bones, you know this is illegal.

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
I only use it for medicinal purposes.
I got aboard a ship that brings me in a case every now and then across the Neutral Zone.
Now don't be a prig.

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Twenty-two, eighty-three.

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
Yeah well it takes this stuff a while to ferment.
Here now, gimme.
...Now you open this one.

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
I'm almost afraid to.
What is it? Klingon aphrodisiacs?

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
No.

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Oh. ...Bones, this is
...charming.

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
For most patients of your age,
I generally administer Retnax Five.

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
I'm allergic to Retnax.

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
Exactly. Cheers!

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Cheers!
...Aahh!

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
Happy Birthday!

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
I don't know what to say.

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
Well you could start by saying
'Thank You'.

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Thank you.

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
Damnit, Jim, what the hell's the matter with you?
Other people have birthdays.
Why are we treating yours like a funeral?

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Bones, I don't want to be lectured.

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
What the hell do you want?

...This is not about age, ...and you know it.

This is about you flying a goddamn computer console when you wanna be out there hopping Galaxies.

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Spare me your notions of poetry, please.
We all have our assigned duties.

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :

Bull.

You're hiding
...hiding behind rules and regulations.

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Who am I hiding from?

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
From yourself, Admiral!

Rear-Admiral Kirk:
Don't mince words, Bones,
What do you really think?

CMO Leonard H. McCoy,
Son of David - The Heart :
Jim, I'm your doctor and I'm your friend.

Get back your command.

Get it back before you turn into part of this collection.

Before you really do grow old.

*****

Rear-Admiral Kirk :
 We've got a problem.
Something may be wrong at Regula I.
We've been ordered to investigate.

Captain Spock - The Head :
If memory serves, Regula I is a scientific research laboratory.

Rear-Admiral Kirk :
I told Starfleet all we had was a boatload of children but
...we're the only ship in the Quadrant.

Spock, these cadets of yours, how good are they?
How will they respond under real pressure?

Captain SPOCK - The Head:
As with all living things, each according to his gifts.
Of course, the ship is yours.

Rear-Admiral Kirk :
No, that won't be necessary, just get me to Regula I.

Captain SPOCK - The Head:
As a teacher on a training mission, I am content to command the Enterprise.

If we are to go on actual duty, it is clear that the senior officer on board must assume command.

Admiral KIRK :
It may be nothing, ...garbled communications.
You take the ship.

Captain SPOCK - The Head:
Jim, you proceed from a false assumption.
I am a Vulcan. I have no ego to bruise.

Admiral KIRK :
You're about to remind me that logic alone dictates your actions.

Captain SPOCK - The Head:
I would not remind you of that which you know so well.

If I may be so bold,
it was a mistake for you to accept promotion.

Commanding a starship is your first best destiny.

Anything else is a waste of material.

Captain KIRK :
I would not presume to debate you.

Science Officer

Capt. SPOCK - The Head:
That is wise.
In any case, were I to invoke logic, logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Captain KIRK:
Or the one.

Science Officer

Capt. SPOCK - The Head:
You are my superior officer.
You are also my friend.
I have been and always shall be yours.

Captain Rabbit :
Okay — time to be The Captain...

So dead brother, huh?
Yeah that can be annoying.

Thor:
Well, he’s been dead before.
But this time, I think it really might be true.

Rocket:
And you said you hate your sister and your dad?

Thor:
Both dead.

Capt. Rocket:
You still got a mom, though?

Thor:
Killed by a dark elf.

Capt. Rocket:
Best friend?

Thor:
Stabbed through the heart.

Capt. Rocket:
You sure you’re up to this mission?

Thor:
Absolutely!
[ starts crying ]
Rage, vengeance, anger, lost are tremendous motivators to clear the mind.
So I’m good to go.

Capt. Rocket:
Yeah, but this Thanos guy you’re talking about...
he’s the toughest there is.

Thor:
Well, he’s never fought me

Capt. Rocket:
Yeah, he has

Thor :
Well, he’s never fought me twice
And I’m getting a new hammer, don’t forget.

Capt. Rocket:
Well, it better some hammer....

Thor
You know, I’m 1500 years old.
I’ve killed twice as many enemies as that.
And every one of them would
have rather killed me
than not succeeded

I’m only alive because
Fate wants me alive.

Thanos is just the latest
of a long line of bastards,
and he’ll be the latest to feel
my vengeance.

Fate Wills it So.

Capt. Rocket:
And what if you’re wrong?

Thor:
Well, if I’m wrong, what more could I lose?

Rocket:
I could lose a lot. Me, personally? I could lose a lot.

[Enterprise-A bridge]

Gen. CHANG
Have you not a shred of decency ...in you, Kirk?
We come in peace - and you blatantly defile that peace.

And for that - I shall blow you out of the stars.

Capt. KIRK:
We haven't fired.

Capt. SPOCK:
Captain - according to our data banks, we have
...Twice.

Lt. VALERIS:
Captain, they're coming about!

Capt. SPOCK:
They're preparing to fire.

Cmdr. CHEKOV:
Shields up, Captain?

Lt. VALERIS:
Captain, our shields!

Cmdr. CHEKOV:
Shields up, Captain?

Captain James T.
KIRK:
(It means "Church")
Signal Our Surrender.

UHURA:
Captain?!

Captain KIRK:
We surrender!

*****

Capt. "Rabbit" :

Okay... Time to be The Captain...
