Invaders Must Die

Fierce Orion

GORN :
Earthling! Captain!

KIRK :
Who is this, the Metron?

GORN :
This is your opponent, Earthling.
I have heard every word you have said.

KIRK :
All right.
What do you want?

GORN :
I'm weary of The Chase.
Wait for me.
I shall be merciful and quick.

KIRK :
Like you were at Cestus Three?

GORN :
You were intruding
You established an outpost in our space.

KIRK :
You butchered helpless human beings

GORN :
We destroyed Invaders!
As I shall destroy you!

MCCOY :
Can that be True
Was Cestus Three an intrusion on their space?

SPOCK:
It may well be possible, Doctor.
We know very little about that section of the galaxy.

MCCOY:
Then we could be in the wrong.

SPOCK:
Perhaps. That is something best decided by diplomats.

MCCOY:
The Gorn simply might have been trying to protect themselves.

SPOCK:
Yes.

(They watch as Kirk returns to the bamboo clump and picks out a short, wide stem.)

SPOCK:
Fascinating.
Good. Good.

(Kirk cuts vines to length against a rock)

He knows, Doctor.
He has reasoned it out.

(Potassium nitrate gets shoveled into the bamboo)

SPOCK:
Yes. Yes.

MCCOY:
What is it, Spock?

SPOCK;
An invention, Doctor.
First potassium nitrate,
and now if he can find some sulphur
and a charcoal deposit or ordinary coal.

(Kirk is at the outcrop of sharp diamonds, and putting them into the bamboo too.)

MCCOY:
What's he doing?

SPOCK :
Diamonds. The Hardest Known Substance.
Impelled by sufficient force, they would make formidable projectiles.

MCCOY:
What force?

SPOCK :
Recall your basic chemistry, Doctor.
Gunpowder.

GORN :
Captain, let us be reasonable --

You have Lost.
Admit it to Yourself.
Stop Running.

(Now the sulphur goes into the cannon, and finally he finds a vein on coal.)

SPOCK :
Coal.

(Now Kirk settles down to empty the bamboo, crush the coal, make a hole in the bamboo for a fuse and then mix his ingredients a little more precisely.)

MCCOY:
Can he do it?

SPOCK:
If he has the time, Doctor.
If he has the time.

(The cannon is strengthened with the vine tied around it, and the gunpowder gets rammed home with a small branch. Finally the diamonds go in, and a piece of torn trouser will serve as a fuse, once he can raise a spark from a stone and the translating device. Fire is created as the Gorn approaches him from behind. Seeing the danger, he braces the cannon and fires it. The explosion blows the bamboo apart, and also incapacitates his opponent. Kirk picks up his fallen stone dagger and puts the point to the Gorn's windpipe, but cannot administer the coup de grace.)

KIRK :
No. No, I won't kill you.
Maybe you thought you were protecting yourself when you attacked the outpost.

(He throws the dagger away, stands up and shouts to the sky)

KIRK:
No, I won't kill him! Do you hear?
You'll have to get your entertainment someplace else!

(The Gorn disappears, and a young blond boy in a white shift appears instead.)

A Man of Many Parts

 .

• REMEMBER •

McCOY:
He's really not dead.
As long as we remember him.

KIRK:
'It's a far, far better thing I do
than I have ever done before.
...A far better resting place
that I go to than I have ever known'.

CAROL:
Is that a poem?

KIRK:
No, no.

Something Spock was
trying to tell me

On my birthday.

Buffy blows up The Judge - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

WILLOW :
Do you think he's dead?

BUFFY,
The Vampire Slayer :
We can't be sure --
Pick up The Pieces and keep 'em seperate.

 ANGEL :
It's a Legend. Way before My Time.

Of a demon brought forth to rid The Earth of The Plague of Humanity.
To separate The Righteous from The Wicked...

And burn The Righteous Down.

They called him The Judge.

 GILES :
The Judge? This is he?

 ANGEL :
Not all of him.

I'm still needing backstory here.

 GILES :
Erm... He...
He couldn't be killed, yes?
Erm... An army was sent against him. Most of them died.
But finally they were able to dismember him,
but... not kill him.

 ANGEL :
The pieces were scattered,
buried in every corner of The Earth.

So all these parts are being brought here?

BUFFY,
The Vampire Slayer :
By Drusilla.
The vamps outside were Spike's men.

 ANGEL :
She's crazy enough to do it.

BUFFY,
The Vampire Slayer :
Do what? Reassemble The Judge?

 ANGEL :
Bring forth Armageddon.

CORDELIA :
Is anybody else gonna have cake?

We need to get this out of town.
Angel.

 ANGEL :
What?

You're the only one that can protect this thing.

BUFFY,
The Vampire Slayer :
What about me?

You're gonna skip town for a few months?

 ANGEL :
I gotta get this to the remotest region possible.

BUFFY,
The Vampire Slayer :
But that's not months.

 ANGEL :
I can catch a cargo ship to Asia...

BUFFY,
The Vampire Slayer :
You know, flying machines are safer than they used to be.

 ANGEL :
I can't fly. There's no sure way to guard against the daylight.
I don't like this any more than you do, Buffy.
But there's no other choice.

BUFFY,
The Vampire Slayer :
When?

 ANGEL :
Tonight. As soon as possible.

BUFFY,
The Vampire Slayer :
But it's my birthday.

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honoured dead.

And yet it should be noted that in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world, a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish.

He did not feel that sacrifice a vain or empty one...
and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings.

Of my friend, I can only say this —
Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels....

His was the most

...Human.

SULU :
Honours, ...hup!

(bagpipes play 'Amazing Grace' as the torpedo coffin is fired)

[Kirk's quarters]

KIRK:
Come.

DAVID:
I don't mean to intrude.

KIRK:
No, not at all. ...I should be on the bridge.

DAVID: Can I talk to you for a minute?
KIRK: I've poured myself a drink. Would you like it?
DAVID: Lieutenant Saavik was right. You never have faced a death.
KIRK: No, not like this. I haven't faced death. I've cheated death. I tricked my way out of death ...and patted myself on the back for my ingenuity. ...I know nothing.
DAVID: You knew enough to tell Saavik that how we face death is at least as important as how we face life.
KIRK: Just words.
DAVID: But good words. That's where ideas begin. Maybe you should listen to them. I was wrong about you and I'm sorry.
KIRK: Is that what you came here to say?

DAVID:
Mainly. ...And also that I'm ...proud, ...very proud ...to be your son.

Captain's log, stardate 8141.6

Starship Enterprise departing for Ceti Alpha Five to pick up the crew of the U.S.S. Reliant.
All is well.

And yet I can't help wondering about the friend I leave behind.
'There are always possibilities' Spock said.

And if Genesis is indeed 'Life from death',
I must return to this place again.

[Enterprise bridge]

McCOY:
He's really not dead.
As long as we remember him.

KIRK:
'It's a far, far better thing I do
than I have ever done before.
...A far better resting place
that I go to than I have ever known'.

CAROL:
Is that a poem?

KIRK:
No, no.

Something Spock was trying to tell me.
On my birthday.

McCOY:
You okay, Jim?
How do you feel?

KIRK:
Young. I feel young.

(the torpedo coffin lays in a clearing in the new, verdant forest on the Genesis planet)

Spock's Voice :

Space — The Final Frontier.

These, are the continuing voyages of the Starship ‘Enterprise'.

Her ongoing mission, to explore strange new worlds…
to seek out new life-forms and new civilisations...

To boldly go
Where no man has gone

Mixed Marriages and Arranged Marriages

AMBASSADOR SAREK, of Vulcan :

The Meaning of Spock's Existence is

The Very Meaning of Our Marriage :

What our two lifeforms combine,

and offer something of value to other lifeforms.

RODDENBERRY :

But if you take the madness, which happens to your people at the time of pon farr, then add to it the extraordinary strength of a Vulcan--"

AMBASSADOR SAREK,

of Vulcan :

Ordinarily an Earth woman could not endure that.

If she survived, she might be severely injured,

both physically and emotionally.

RODDENBERRY :

Regarding that--

AMBASSADOR SAREK,

of Vulcan :

Roddenberry, I will not paint a word picture.

I will say, that Humans and Vulcans mate in...

Somewhat similar fashion--in quite a similar fashion.

But physical contour, mass, duration and energy do vary.

Since we are deprived of our Reason, during this time,

the rest depends upon The Woman

Not just her strength, but also her wisdom.

 Her patience."

"Sarek's Son Spock" -- Gene Roddenberry talks to Mark Lenard in connection with

"Inside Star Trek", a tribute to Star Trek released in 1976.

Roddenberry to transporter officer:

Set transporter for Vulcan Embassy.

Coordinates on Vulcan Embassy.

Lock on to Ambassador Sarek.

Ambassador Sarek, sir. Engaging.

[transporter effect]

Welcome, Ambassador Sarek.

My old friend Roddenberry, it's been years since we've met.

"And I have many new questions, Ambassador--

much more intimate, and personal, than I have ever had to ask before."

About my son Spock, I presume.

Well, yes, if you include the beginnings of Spock...

There are some things I must know, Ambassador, in order to continue with my Star Trek journey.

Forgive me, but how were you able to... overcome... the Vulcan pon farr mating drive?

I presume you did overcome it, Spock's mother Amanda was human, and somehow she was impregnated by you—

Roddenberry, are you asking if we coupled?

Ehrr, yes, sir.

We know that Vulcans normally mate only once every seven years--"

And since it is known that we pay for our sexual repression during these years by an almost animal madness, this has aroused a... a prurient curiosity among humans.

It comes out of our affection for your son Spock, Ambassador. And your son's future. He's half Human, we've seen him reject a Vulcan marriage, is marriage to a Human female possible to him?

It was for me.

But if you take the madness, which happens to your people at the time of pon farr, then add to it the extraordinary strength of a Vulcan--

Ordinarily an Earth woman could not endure that.

If she survived, she might be severely injured, both physically and emotionally.

Regarding that--

Roddenberry, I will not paint a word picture.

I will say, that Humans and Vulcans mate in... somewhat similar fashion--in quite a similar fashion.

But physical contour, mass, duration and energy do vary.

Since we are deprived of our reason, during this time, the rest depends upon the woman.

Not just her strength,

but also her wisdom. Her patience.

Is it possible to ever completely overcome the pon farr madness?

It is probably impossible to a Vulcan in his youthful prime.

Fortunately, I was not.

And it was no doubt helped by the fact that I spent almost thirty years as Ambassador to other Federation planets.

And you spent many of those years on Earth itself?

Yes. But this gives too much credit to me.

Spock's mother Amanda is an extraordinary woman.

And Spock was the result.

The first Human-Vulcan mixture.

No, not the first.

But the first to survive

As you must know, an Earth-Vulcan conception will abort during the end of the first month.

The fetus is unable to continue life once it begins to develop its primary organs.

The fetus Spock was removed from Amanda's body at this time --

The first such experiment ever attempted.

His tiny form resided in a test tube for the following two Earth months, while our physicians performed delicate chemical engineering, introducing over a hundred subtle changes that we hoped would sustain life.

At the end of this time, the fetus was returned to Amanda's womb.

At the ninth Earth month, the tiny form was again removed from Amanda, prematurely by Vulcan standards, and spent the following four months Vulcan term pregnancy in a specially designed incubator.

The infant Spock proved surprisingly resilient--there seems to be something about the Earth-Vulcan mixture, which created in that.. tiny body.. a fierce determination to survive.

And, as Spock grew into childhood, Ambassador--

Yes, yes. There must have been times when his inner mind wondered, if the fight to survive had been worthwhile.

You see, while all Vulcans, including our children, live by the code of IDIC, and believe that diversity is to be admired, and treasured, it must be understood that the display of emotion is considered on our planet to be grossly offensive

No, more than that.

Shockingly indecent.

I can only explain that our attitude is rooted in Vulcan history, involving events of such bloody violence

that it's left our race forever scarred, and sensitive to displays of emotion.

Whether or not this Vulcan attitude can be defended,

the fact is, it exists.

Young Spock was allowed no smiles, no tears, no anger...

Such emotions, so common among your small children, are shocking, even appalling, to a Vulcan child.

Spock's playmates could only assume that the bearer of these emotions was exhibiting hatred for his fellows.

Some desire to embarrass, to disgust them.

The children were prepared to enjoy Spock's diversity, they were not prepared

for my son's demonstrating what seemed to be an obscenity of the grossest kind.

It must have been a cruel existence for Spock.

It was.

Then, what kept your family on Vulcan?

We felt... Spock's torture, of course.

But Amanda and I also had A Dream.

One that justified even the risk of our precious son's life and sanity.

What point is there in any life surviving unless it has Meaning?

The Meaning of Spock's Existence is the very meaning of our Marriage:

What our two lifeforms combine,

and offer something of value to other lifeforms.

"IDIC."

Yes. Infinite Diversity from Infinite Combinations.

It has given us quite a lovely Universe.

I will return to Vulcan now, if I may.

Thank you, Ambassador. Engage transporter.

[transporter effect]

================

OSEPH CAMPBELL:

The Libido is The Impulse to Life.

BILL MOYERS:

Comes from where?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:

Comes from The Heart.

BILL MOYERS:
And The Heart is what?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:

The Heart is the organ of opening up to

Somebody Else.

That’s the human quality, as opposed to the animal qualities, which have to do with, primarily with self-interest.

Opening up to that which is other is the opening of The Heart, and that’s as the troubadours saw it, it is the opening of The Heart.

BILL MOYERS:

I can certainly understand, though, why The Church was threatened by this, because how can you have a church if everyone’s libido is his or her Own God?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:

Why Not?

Why can’t The Church handle that?

If you can sanctify a marriage that has been arranged,
why can’t you sanctify A Marriage where two people have Joined Each Other?

BILL MOYERS:
So the courage to love became
the courage to affirm against Tradition
whatever knowledge stands confirmed
in one’s own experience.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:
Yeah.

BILL MOYERS:
Why was that important in
The Evolution of The West?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:
Well, it was important in that it gives The West this accent, as I’ve been saying, on the individual, that he should have faith in his experience, and not simply mouth terms that have come to him from other mouths.

I think that’s the great thing in The West.

The validity of the individual’s experience of what humanity is, what life is, what values are, against the monolithic system.

BILL MOYERS:
Was there some of this in the legend of The Holy Grail?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:
Yes. Wolfram has a very interesting statement about The Origin of The Grail.

He says The Grail was brought from Heaven by
The Neutral Angels.

There was The War in Heaven
between God and Lucifer,
and the angelic hosts that sided one group with Lucifer,
and the other with God

Pair of opposites,
Good and Evil
God and Satan

The Grail was brought down through The Middle,
The Way of The Middle,
by The Neutral angels.

BILL MOYERS:
What is the Grail representing, then?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:

Well, the Grail becomes the, what we call it,

That which is attained and realized by people who have lived their own lives.

ORCHIDS

“Hybrids! A Crime against Nature!”

[Tuvok's quarters]
(Tuvok is tending his orchids when the doorbell rings.)

TUVOK:
Come in. Captain, this is unexpected.

JANEWAY:
I've been in your quarters before.

TUVOK:
Indeed, but so rarely that I can
remember each instance.
Vulcan spice tea, hot.
And it was always at a time when
you were particularly troubled.

JANEWAY:
Right as usual. Thank you.
Commander Chakotay has proposed that we make an alliance with one of the Kazon factions.
We wouldn't give them weapons or technology, but we would pledge to support and defend them if they're attacked.

TUVOK:
I am sure that made you uncomfortable.

JANEWAY:
How can I consider it?
I can't just walk away from the precepts Starfleet has laid our for us.

You don't deal with Outlaws.

You don't involve yourself in the political machinations of other cultures.

It goes against everything I believe, everything I trained for, everything experience has taught me.

TUVOK:
Quite right.

JANEWAY:
Do I hear a ‘however’ coming?

TUVOK:
You are perceptive, Captain.

I believe Commander Chakotay's suggestion does have merit.

JANEWAY:
Help me understand that.

TUVOK:
When I was a Young Man,
A Great Visionary named Spock recommended an alliance between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

This produced a major dispute.
The Klingons, after all, were Outlaws, employing violence and brutality in order to build their Empire.

I myself spoke out against such a coalition.

But the alliance was forged and it brought a stability to the quadrant that had not been there for two hundred years.

Spock's suggestion, so controversial at first,
proved to be the cornerstone of peace.

JANEWAY:
There are some differences here.

By allying ourselves to one faction, we'd be giving that faction more power than the others.

That would clearly affect the internal politics of all the Kazon.

TUVOK:
I understand your concern, but remember, it would only be a temporary arrangement since we are on our way out of this quadrant.

In the meantime, it might bring stability to the region and security for us.

JANEWAY:
Once we're gone they'll probably go back to their in-fighting.

TUVOK:
Perhaps. But even temporary stability can bring an appreciation for peace

This flower is a rare hybrid.

As far as I know it exists nowhere else in the galaxy.

I created it by grafting a cutting from a South American orchid onto a Vulcan favinit plant.

I doubted the graft would take,
and indeed the plant was sickly at first.

However, after a few weeks both plants adapted to their new condition and in fact became stronger than either had been alone.
