ORION FIGHTS FOR EARTH !!

“Jack “King” Kirby was the most influential superhero artist of them all, with an imagination and range that sat comfortably inside a visionary tradition running all the way from Hebrew scriptures and epic mythology through William Blake and Allen Ginsberg. Born Jakob Kurtzberg in August 1917—Jack Kirby was the one of his many pennames that stuck—Kirby grew up in a tenement on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. As a member of the Suffolk Street Gang, he was familiar with the thrill of full-on physical conflict in a way that many of his bookish young contemporaries were not. Indeed, unlike Joe Shuster or Bob Kane, who drew fights at a sniffy remove, Kirby dragged his readers directly into the wild flail of fists and boots that typified the real combat he’d experienced.

His figures captured how it felt to somersault through a crowd of antagonists. His heroes and villains clashed in bony, meaty brawls that could sprawl across page after page. Superman might wrestle a giant ape for a panel or two, but in Kirby’s hands, the fight scenes were a thrilling end in themselves.

Kirby served in World War II as a private first class in Company F of the Eleventh Infantry. He landed on Omaha Beach at Normandy two months after D-day in 1944 and proceeded with his unit into occupied France. There he saw action at the battle for Bastogne, Belgium, enduring frostbite so severe that Kirby almost lost both feet and was finally mustered out with a combat infantry badge and Bronze Star for his trouble. His memories of the war informed his work for the rest of his life, but nonetheless, Kirby portrayed violence as a joyous expression of natural masculine exuberance.

When American Nazis marched into the building where Simon and Kirby had their studio, demanding the blood of the Captain America creative team, it was Jack who rolled up his sleeves and went to sort them out."

“As the monster-child, Orion, grew to manhood on New Genesis, his life dramatized debates of nature versus nurture, good versus evil, youth versus age, tyranny versus freedom. Kirby was dealing with the big dualities and had assembled his own gleaming pantheon to help him articulate the questions of the age.

Kirby told us that humanity’s better nature would inevitably prevail. That was the story, and we all knew it deep in our hearts. Kindness and understanding could turn even a demon into a holy warrior, but an angel could never be broken to the Devil’s service and would always find ways to soar and to be free.

The war would never end, but the outcome was never in any doubt.”

BILL MOYERS:
The mesmerizing character for me is —

Darth Maul.

When I saw him, I thought of Satan and Lucifer in “Paradise Lost.”
I thought of the devil in “Dante’s Inferno.”
I mean, you’ve really — have brought from
— it seems to me —
from way down in our unconsciousness this image of —
of Evil, of The Other.

GEORGE LUCAS:
Well, yeah.
We were trying to find somebody who could compete with Darth Vader, who’s one of the most, you know, famous evil characters now.

And so we went back into representations of evil.

Not only, the Christian, but also Hindu and Greek mythology and other religious icons and, obviously, then designed our own — our own character out of that.

BILL MOYERS:
What did you find when you went back there in —
in all of these representations?
There’s something …

GEORGE LUCAS:
A lot of — a lot of evil characters have horns
It’s very interesting.
I mean, you’re trying to build a icon of evil,
and you sort of wonder why the same images evoke the same emotions.

BILL MOYERS:
What emotion do you feel, George, when you look at Darth Maul?

GEORGE LUCAS:
I think the first thing you’re supposed to react to is fear

You’re supposed to go,
‘Ooh. You — you wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alley.'

And I’m not creating a monster.

I didn’t want to create some ugly — somebody ripped out their intestines and threw them all over their head
— and it’s — you can’t watch it.
This is something …

BILL MOYERS:
It’s actually mesmerizing.

GEORGE LUCAS:
This is something that is more —
it works in a different emotional way.
It’s not repulsive, it’s just —

It’s something you should be afraid of.

BILL MOYERS:
Is the emotion you wanted from him different from the emotion you wanted from Darth Vader?

GEORGE LUCAS:
It’s essentially the same in a different kind of way.

Darth Vader was a — a composite man.
I mean, he was half-machine, half-man.

And that’s where he lost a lot of his humanity is that he —
you know, he has mechanical legs.
You know — and he has mechanical arms possibly and he’s hooked up to a breathing machine.

So there’s not much, actually, human left in him.

This one is all human.

And I wanted him to be like an alien, but I wanted him to be human enough that we could identify with him, because he’s not a sort of a monster we can’t identify with. He’s…

BILL MOYERS:
He’s us.

GEORGE LUCAS:
…he’s — yeah.

He’s the evil within us.

BILL MOYERS:
I’ve had psychotherapists tell me that they use “Star Wars” sometimes to deal with the problems of their child patients.

And they’ve said that the most popular character among the children is Darth Vader.

GEORGE LUCAS:
Well, children love power because children are The Powerless.

And so their fantasies all center on having power.

And who’s more powerful than Darth Vader, you know?
And, some, you know, will be attracted to Luke Skywalker because he’s the good guy.

But ultimately,
We all know that Darth Vader’s more powerful than he is.

GEORGE LUCAS:
And as time goes on, you discover that he is more powerful because—

He's The Ultimate Father
Who is All-Powerful.

BILL MOYERS:
This is where I disagree somewhat with our friend Joseph Campbell who said that
The Young Man has to slay his father before he can become an adult himself.

It seems to me, and I think you’re right on here, that

The Young Man has to identify —
has to recognise and acknowledge that

He is His Father
and
Is Not His Father.

GEORGE LUCAS:
You know, Joe used to talk about the basic issues that create
The Mystery of Life.

Of, you know, birth and death
and I like to always add,
 Your relationship with your parents.

BILL MOYERS:
Do you know yet what is going to be the transforming of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader?

GEORGE LUCAS:
Yeah.

BILL MOYERS:
You already know that?

GEORGE LUCAS:
Yeah, I know what that is.
And it’s sprinkled throughout this episode.
I mean, the groundwork’s been laid in this episode.

And the — the film is ultimately about the Dark Side and the Light Side, and those sides are designed around compassion and greed

And we all have those two sides of us and that we have to make sure that those two sides of us are in balance.

BILL MOYERS:
I think it’s going to be very hard for the audience to accept that this innocent cherub almost of a boy, who’s playing Anakin Skywalker, can ever be capable of the things that we know happen later on.

And I’m sure you’ll take care of that but, you know, I look at Hitler and wonder what did he look like at eight years old, or Stalin …

GEORGE LUCAS:
Mm-hmm …

BILL MOYERS:
… or …

GEORGE LUCAS:
Well, there are lots of — there’s a lot of people like that.
I mean, you just — you see them all the time and you — that’s what I wonder.

I wonder,
'How can those people possibly exist? How could they live with themselves?
[ VODKA ]

How could they — you know, what is it in the human brain that gives us the capacity to be as evil as human beings have been in the past and are right now.

BILL MOYERS:
Well, you’ve been probing that for a good while now.

GEORGE LUCAS:
Yeah.

BILL MOYERS:
Twenty-five years.
Have you come to any conclusions?

GEORGE LUCAS:
I haven’t.

Neo:
I only ask to say What I’ve Come to Say, after that, do what you want and I won’t try to stop you.

Welcome to Wherever You Are

BILL MOYERS:
Do you ever have sympathy for the man who has no invisible means of support?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: Who has no invisible means yes, he’s the one that evokes compassion, you know, the poor chap. And to see him stumbling around, when the water of immortal life is right there, is really evokes one’s pity.

BILL MOYERS:
Right there? Right there? Youn believe that?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:
Yes, yes.

BILL MOYERS:
The waters of eternal life?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:
Right there.

BILL MOYERS:
Where?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL:
Wherever you are if you’re following your bliss. I mean, you’re having that joy, that refreshment, that life, all the time.

The Secondary Fathers : Leo McGarry

"...So, this is what He [Satan] essentially said [during an exorcism] :-

He said, 'We Do Not Have The Right to afflict people, or cause problems in these areas of their lives, by shutting off their finances or destroying their relationships, here -

Christ gives Us permission to do it, but We don't have any Rights -

We Do it, Hoping the Person Will
PLAY THE VICTIM
When it Happens -

What's That Mean...?It means, that when something really  BAD  happens in their lives, they will just go

"Look what's happening to me, there's nothing I can do about this,
it keeps recurring,
everything I do, nothing's working.."

so they just give it over [to The Demons] , so They can just maraude the person's life.

THAT'S THEIR GOAL
or at least,
BE UNIMPEDED

He said,
'What you have to do is,
since We have no  Rights,
BUT YOU DO
by The Natural Law,
The Natural Law, according to Leo XIII, states,
(That We Know by Reason)
That :

WE HAVE RIGHTS OVER OUR PROPERTY

WE HAVE RIGHTS OVER OUR GOOD REPUTATION

WE HAVE RIGHTS OVER THE PRODUCT OF OUR WORK

And so, what He [Satan] was saying was,

'You Have Rights Over These Things

You Need to Reassert Your Rights
and
Kick Us Out!'

and that's what We started doing."

Bartlet heads to the door. He stops as he remembers something.
BARTLET
Oh, Roger, if anything happened, you know what to do, right?

TRIBBYI honestly hadn't thought about it sir.

BARTLET

First thing always is national security.

Get your commanders together.
Appoint joint chiefs.
Appoint chairman.
Take them to Defcon 4.

Have the governor send emergency delegates to Washington.
The assistant attorney general is gonna be the acting A.G
If he tells you he wants to bring out the National Guard, do what he tells you.

LEO'S OFFICE.
As Bartlet tells Tribby the procedure, we see Leo walk into his office to get his coat.
The door to the Oval Office is open so he can hear the President and Tribby, but couldn't see them.
BARTLET
You have a best friend?

ROGER
Yes, sir.

BARTLET
Is he smarter than you?

ROGER
Yes, sir.

BARTLET
Would you trust him with your life?

ROGER
Yes, sir.

BARTLET
That's your chief of staff.

Leo, obvioiusly touched, stops for a minute and walks away.

Back in THE OVAL OFFICE, Charlie walks in. Bartlet continues to speak.
BARTLETOh, in the residence, in the second floor, the bathroom at the end of the hall.
You have to jiggle the handle a little.

CHARLIEMr. President?

BARTLETI got to go.
[beat]
You'll do fine.
People have phenomenal capacity.

ROGERYes, sir.

Bartlet holds his book and puts his fist against his chest close to the heart.
Tribby stands watch as the President and Charlie leave.
After they've gone, Tribby is standing in front of the Presidential seal and looks around the Oval Office in awe.

The Secondary Fathers : Josiah Bartlett

What was Josh Lyman?
A warning shot?
That was My Son.
What did I ever do to yours but praise His glory and praise His name?
There's a Tropical Storm that's gaining speed and power.

T.V. REPORTER
With 17% of the precincts reporting, we are now ready to call the Illinois primary for former New Hampshire Governor Jed Bartlet.

Everyone cheers, cheers, cheers all around, and hugs as "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang plays.

JOSH
[pointing at Sam] Yes!
Leo enters and gives Josh a big hug.

LEO
Hey, hey, hey! Way to go! Now, let's get to California.

Leo runs away to party.

JOSH
Leo, we've got to replace this music, we've got to replace it with some Doobie Brothers!

Donna walks up to Josh apprehensively as the others party round.

DONNA
Josh?

JOSH
And Donna, you've got to get happy, Donna, you just won the Illinois Primary, come dance with me!

DONNA
No, Josh. No, Josh... your father died.

Josh stares at her, stunned.

FADE TO: INT. CHICAGO AIRPORT - NIGHT
In a T.V. screen at the airplane gate, we see a reporter.

REPORTER
...very happy Bartlet Supporters. We are told the candidate is in the suite, refining his remarks, he's due to be down here at any moment. Just over an hour ago...

The camera pulls down to the coolest blocking on television. Two men walk under the TV, one right past an oblivious Josh. The first man says something into his sleeve, and stops to stand about three feet away from Josh, near the counter. The second man, earpiece visible, walks past Josh on the other side of his seat, and stops to stand near the windows. Josh doesn't quite realize what's going on until a third man slides into view  in the front left of the screen. All of a sudden, Bartlet appears, walking out of the  right side of screen, directly behind Josh.

[Do yourself a favor -- if you've got it on tape, watch it a couple of more times. It's the coolest thing ever.]

BARTLET
Josh?

JOSH
[jumping up] Governor!

BARTLET
Your father died, Josh. I can't believe it.

JOSH
Yeah, uh, Governor, you -- you shouldn't be here.

BARTLET
What happened?

Bartlet sits down. Josh also awkwardly sits.

JOSH
He, uh, went for his chemotherapy and he unexpectedly developed a pulmonary embolism,
it's a --

BARTLET
It's a blood clot.

JOSH
Yeah. It went to his heart and there was cardiac arrest.

BARTLET
Yeah... Yeah.

JOSH
Governor, you should really get back to the ballroom, so that you can get on a plane and
get to California.

BARTLET
He was a lawyer?

JOSH
Yeah, a litigator.

BARTLET
Did he like that you were in politics?

JOSH
I think he would have liked grandchildren more.

BARTLET
[chuckling] He would've.

JOSH
He liked that I was working for you. He liked that we were starting to do well.
He would've liked tonight. At least his friends and neighbors will be spared all the...  you know...

BARTLET
He'd have been doing some bragging?

JOSH
Yeah, and your name wouldn't have come up, by the way. "My son won the Illinois primary
tonight". Three more hours, and he would have been able to say that. He'd have been proud.

BARTLET
He was already. Trust me, Josh, I'm a father. He was already.

JOSH
I appreciate that, Governor. You should really get back to the hotel.

BARTLET
Nah, I'm okay.

JOSH
Sir, not that I don't appreciate you coming down here, but there's a ballroom full of
people waiting for a victory speech.

BARTLET
They'll wait.

JOSH
Yeah, they will, but the people watching television won't.

BARTLET
I've been a real jackass to you, Josh.

JOSH
Well.

BARTLET
To everybody. Toby Ziegler, C.J. Cregg, Sam Seaborn.

JOSH
Yeah.

BARTLET
Don't think I don't know what you gave up to work on this campaign, and don't think that
I don't know your value. And I'll never make you think I don't again. You got to be a
little impressed that I got all those names right just now.

Josh chuckles.
FLIGHT ATTENDANT [VO]
Delta Airlines Flight 175 to Kennedy International now boarding...

JOSH
They're calling my flight.

He gets up, and so does Bartlet.

BARTLET
You want me to go with you?

JOSH
[stops] Go with me?

BARTLET
Maybe you want some company on the plane.

He starts to feel all his pockets for his wallet.

BARTLET
I could get a ticket and come with you.

JOSH
Governor! California. You have to go the ballroom and give a Victory speech in primetime
and go to California.

BARTLET
I guess you're right.

JOSH
[laughing] You guess I'm right? Listen to me, Governor, if you don't lose this election,
it isn't going to be because you didn't try hard enough. But it was nice of you to ask.
Thank you, I appreciate.

BARTLET
They're calling your flight.
Josh turns to board the plane, taking one last look at Bartlet, who nods encouragingly to
him. Josh boards the plane. Leo walks up behind Bartlet.

LEO
Is he going to be all right?

BARTLET
He's going to be fine.

LEO
Good.

Bartlet turns around to face Leo.

BARTLET
Leo?

LEO
Yeah?

BARTLET
I'm ready.

Leo grins in understanding, and then joins Bartlet as they walk out of the terminal,
several people recognizing Bartlet and stopping to shake his hand, all the while we hear
Bartlet giving his speech.

BARTLET [VO]
Tonight, what began on the commons in Concord, Massachusetts, as an alliance of farmers
and workers, of cobbles man and tinsmiths, of statesmen and students, of mothers and
wives, of men and boys, lives two centuries later as America! My name is Josiah Bartlet,
and I accept your nomination for the Presidency of the United States!
The speech ends, we hear cheers and applause, but we--

FADE TO WHITE.

DR. HOLBROOK [VO]
Josh? Josh, wake up, it's okay.

FADE TO: INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - PRESENT
The camera is closed in on Josh, lying on his hospital bed, with his eyes closed.

DR. HOLBROOK [OS]
I want you to wake up.
Josh opens his eyes slowly and looks around, muttering something as the camera pulls back
from his face. He is surrounded by Leo, the doctors, and Bartlet, who leans in.

BARTLET
I couldn't hear you, Josh.

Bartlet leans in closer, and then pulls back.

LEO
What did he say?

BARTLET
He said, "What's next?"

Bartlet lays his hand on Josh's head as we --
