EPISTEMOLOGY

One of the central concerns of Philosophy is to investigate how we know what we know, if there is such a thing as Certain Knowledge, and, if so, how it is attained.

This is a topic of concern to the Tantra as well, and it is explored in depth by the scholar-sages Utpala Deva and Abhinava Gupta.

The difficult and abstruse nature of these discussions invite us to focus on a simpler formulation offered by the second author in his Essence of the Tantras. There Abhinava tells us that the process of creative contemplation or holistic meditative inquiry (bhāvanā-krama) that leads to experiential knowing of reality is based on these three supports:

❖ sound and careful reflection on your experience (sat-tarka)

❖ the guidance of a great teacher (sad-guru) who is skilled in meditative enquiry and has attained its fruit

❖ the wisdom of the scriptures (sad-āgama)

When these three come together in agreement, Abhinava suggests, we know we have arrived at truth. One or two of them is insufficient for certainty. In fact, allowing ourselves to abide in uncertainty about anything not supported by all three keeps us open and in a process of learning that closes down if we prematurely decide that we know. Usually in Indian philosophy, the first two valid means of knowledge that are argued for are direct perception and valid inference; here they are combined into sat-tarka, which means the process of drawing sound conclusions based on one’s experience. In logic (both Western and Indian), a conclusion is “sound” when the premises are true and the structure of thought leading to the conclusion is valid. To give a slightly modified version of the standard Indian example of a logical argument: Premise 1: Where there is smoke, there is fire (axiom based on the aggregate of one’s experiences). Premise 2: There is smoke on the mountain over there (direct observation). Conclusion: Therefore, there is fire on the mountain. The argument is called valid structurally because if the premises are true, the conclusion must also be true. But it is only sound (= correct) if the premises are in fact true. And this particular argument is an example of inference because there is no way to be one hundred per cent sure that there is always fire whenever and wherever there is smoke. The standard argument in the Indian system of logic is not deduction, which seeks to establish irrefutable certainty, but inference. Unlike in Western philosophy, in the Indian system you never decide that you know for sure, and so you never completely close yourself to unguessed possibilities. Thus the sense of wonder and openness that is the foundation of all philosophy is maintained. The problem of direct experience as a means of knowledge is that people often draw conclusions based on their experience that are logically invalid. They don’t realize they are doing so because their assumptions and the process by which they draw their conclusions usually go unexamined. Even more basically, they are often unable to separate their experience from their interpretation. People can get ruffled when their interpretation of their experience is questioned, saying, “But that’s my experience!” In fact, anything you can say in words about your experience is an interpretation, not the experience itself. On the path of inquiry into truth, we never devalue or dispense with reflection on our personal experience (note that Abhinava mentions it first), yet since we cannot be one hundred per cent certain about the conclusions we draw or how universally applicable they are, we soften our iron grip on our apparently safe and comfortable sense of certainty and seek to corroborate it with trusted authorities: the teacher and sacred scripture. To some Westerners, having the spiritual teacher and scripture as the other two legs of the tripod seems redundant. But this system of checks and balances is well worked out. Scripture exists as a representative document of a whole community; because even if a given scripture was written by just one person, it is transmitted (copied and recopied) for centuries if and only if some of its contents are effective for a wider group of people. As a document of collective wisdom perpetuated by community, scripture protects you from an aberrant teacher who preaches his own idiosyncratic experience as if it were universal, thereby potentially leading you astray. Of course, for this setup to work, you must read a scripture with your own judgment, not solely on the basis of the teacher’s interpretation of it. On the other hand, though scriptures are presumed to have been written by an awakened master, a healthy skepticism is maintained by requiring their wisdom to be corroborated by the other two sources of knowledge. Further, the requirement of the living teacher means that you are protected from an off-the-wall interpretation of scripture you arrived at in your own head. Such an interpretation might make sense to you, might even feel good, but is seen by the teacher with clear long-term view to be one that will eventually take you off track. Such a teacher will rarely say, “You’re wrong,” but will more likely challenge you to contemplate deeper, beyond your conditioned mind. This system of double corroboration for valid knowledge allows us to come up with seeds of wisdom that we can count on and build a spiritual life on. But the process is not completed until these seeds come to life as living, vibrating wisdom within us. That is, in the Tantra, we seek not just to know wisdom but to fully embody it. The evidence that you have done so is that you no longer need the external form of the teaching (the words or concepts); it has simply blossomed into living experience, unsupported by any reminders. When this happens, then no matter how beautiful the words of the teaching are, they seem to be flat or pale or inadequate in comparison with the actual experience.

Gen. CUTLER:

Now look, I don't know who you are or what you are, but we've got two Men in Space.

If we don't act now we won't get them back alive.

(The Cyberman opens its mouth but does not move any lips as it speaks in a strange sing-song tone that puts emphasis in all the wrong places.)

CYBERLEADER KRAIL:

They wi—ll not•return.

CUTLER:

Why not?

CYBERLEADER KRAIL:

It i—s unimportant•now

CUTLER:

But We must get them back!

When—

CYBERLEADER KRAIL:

There is really No Point.

They could never reach Earth now.

POLLY :

But don't you CARE?

CYBERLEADER KRAIL:

Care?

No, Why •Should• I Care?

GRAHAM

“Lots of you knew Grace longer than me, so I can't stand here and pretend to know everything about her.

I wasn't her first husband, but she said I would do for a second attempt.

I can only tell you about the Grace I met, when I thought I didn't have much time left.

The... the Grace that showed me life had more to offer, and...

And I know if she was here now, she'd tell us not to be so sad.

You see, I can hear her saying to me,
“Graham, we had three glorious years, what're you complaining about?”

I'm complaining because I wanted more.

You see, Grace was a better person than I could ever be.

And I should have gone and...
Grace should still be here.

[Outside Ryan's home]

ALWAYS ASK A BUS DRIVER —

Our Lady :
What did you mean in your speech, you thought you'd run out of time?

GRAHAM:
Oh, well, er, I had cancer and er...

Well, strictly speaking, I'm still in remission, three years gone.

And Grace was my chemo nurse.
That's where we met and fell in love.

So By Rights,
I shouldn't even be here.

YAZ :
Have you got Family?

Our Lady :
No. Lost them a long time ago.

RYAN:
How do you cope with that?

Our Lady :
I carry them with me.

What they would've thought and said and done.

I make them a part of
Who I Am.

So even though they're gone from The World,
they're never gone from Me

GRAHAM
That's the sort of thing Grace would have said.

The ALL in ALL

"While All is in THE ALL, it is equally true that THE
ALL is in ALL. To him who truly understands this
truth hath come great knowledge."—The Kybalion.

How often have the majority of people heard repeated the statement that their Deity (called by many names) was "All in All" and how little have they suspected the inner occult truth concealed by these carelessly uttered words? The commonly used expression is a survival of the ancient Hermetic Maxim quoted above. As the Kybalion says: "To him who truly understands this truth, hath come great knowledge." And, this being so, let us seek this truth, the understanding of which means so much. In this statement of truth—this Hermetic Maxim—is concealed one of the greatest philosophical, scientific and religious truths.

We have given you the Hermetic Teaching regarding the Mental Nature of the Universe—the truth that "the Universe is Mental—held in the Mind of THE ALL." As the Kybalion says, in the passage quoted above: "All is in THE ALL." But note also the co-related statement, that: "It is equally true that THE ALL is in ALL." This apparently contradictory statement is reconcilable under the Law of Paradox. It is, moreover, an exact Hermetic statement of the relations existing between THE ALL and its Mental Universe. We have seen how "All is in THE ALL"—now let us examine the other aspect of the subject.

The Hermetic Teachings are to the effect that THE ALL is Imminent in ("remaining within; inherent; abiding within") its Universe, and in every part, particle, unit, or combination, within the Universe. This statement is usually illustrated by the Teachers by a reference to the Principle of Correspondence. The Teacher instructs the student to form a Mental Image of something, a person, an idea, something having a mental form, the favorite example being that of the author or dramatist forming an idea of his characters; or a painter or sculptor forming an image of an ideal that he wishes to express by his art. In each case, the student will find that while the image has its existence, and being, solely within his own mind, yet he, the student, author, dramatist, painter, or sculptor, is, in a sense, immanent in; remaining within; or abiding within, the mental image also. In other words, the entire virtue, life, spirit, of reality in the mental image is derived from the "immanent mind" of the thinker. Consider this for a moment, until the idea is grasped.

To take a modern example, let us say that Othello, Iago, Hamlet, Lear, Richard III, existed merely in the mind of Shakespeare, at the time of their conception or creation. And yet, Shakespeare also existed within each of these characters, giving them their vitality, spirit, and action. Whose is the "spirit" of the characters that we know as Micawber, Oliver Twist, Uriah Heep—is it Dickens, or have each of these characters a personal spirit, independent of their creator? Have the Venus of Medici, the Sistine Madonna, the Apollo Belvidere, spirits and reality of their own, or do they represent the spiritual and mental power of their creators? The Law of Paradox explains that both propositions are true, viewed from the proper viewpoints. Micawber is both Micawber, and yet Dickens. And, again, while Micawber may be said to be Dickens, yet Dickens is not identical with Micawber. Man, like Micawber, may exclaim: "The Spirit of my Creator is inherent within me— and yet I am not HE!" How different this from the shocking half-truth so vociferously announced by certain of the half-wise, who fill the air with their raucous cries of: "I am God!

Imagine poor Micawber, or the sneaky Uriah Heep, crying: "I Am Dickens"; or some of the lowly clods in one of Shakespeare's plays, eloquently announcing that: "I Am Shakespeare!

THE ALL is in the earthworm, and yet the earth-worm is far from being THE ALL. And still the wonder remains, that though the earth-worm exists merely as a lowly thing, created and having its being solely within the Mind of THE ALL—yet THE ALL is immanent in the earthworm, and in the particles that go to make up the earth-worm. Can there be any greater mystery than this of "All in THE ALL; and THE ALL in All?"

The student will, of course, realize that the illustrations given above are necessarily imperfect and inadequate, for they represent the creation of mental images in finite minds, while the Universe is a creation of Infinite Mind—and the difference between the two poles separates them. And yet it is merely a matter of degree—the same Principle is in operation—the Principle of Correspondence manifests in each—"As above, so Below; as Below, so above."

And, in the degree that Man realizes the existence of the Indwelling Spirit immanent within his being, so will he rise in the spiritual scale of life. This is what spiritual development means—the recognition, realization, and manifestation of the Spirit within us. Try to remember this last definition—that of spiritual development. It contains the Truth of True Religion.

There are many planes of Being—many sub-planes of Life—many degrees of existence in the Universe. And all depend upon the advancement of beings in the scale, of which scale the lowest point is the grossest matter, the highest being separated only by the thinnest division from the SPIRIT of THE ALL. And, upward and onward along this Scale of Life, everything is moving. All are on the Path, whose end is THE ALL. All progress is a Returning Home. All is Upward and Onward, in spite of all seemingly contradictory appearances. Such is the message of the Illumined.

The Hermetic Teachings concerning the process of the Mental Creation of the Universe, are that at the beginning of the Creative Cycle, THE ALL, in its aspect of Being, projects its Will toward its aspect of "Becoming" and the process of creation begins. It is taught that the process consists of the lowering of Vibration until a very low degree of vibratory energy is reached, at which point the grossest possible form of Matter is manifested. This process is called the stage of Involution, in which THE ALL becomes "involved," or "wrapped up," in its creation. This process is believed by the Hermetists to have a Correspondence to the mental process of an artist, writer, or inventor, who becomes so wrapped up in his mental creation as to almost forget his own existence and who, for the time being, almost "lives in his creation," If instead of "wrapped" we use the word "rapt," perhaps we will give a better idea of what is meant.

This Involuntary stage of Creation is sometimes called the "Outpouring" of the Divine Energy, just as the Evolutionary state is called the "Indrawing." The extreme pole of the Creative process is considered to be the furthest removed from THE ALL, while the beginning of the Evolutionary stage is regarded as the beginning of the return swing of the pendulum of Rhythm—a "coming home" idea being held in all of the Hermetic Teachings.

The Teachings are that during the "Outpouring," the vibrations become lower and lower until finally the urge ceases, and the return swing begins. But there is this difference, that while in the "Outpouring" the creative forces manifest compactly and as a whole, yet from the beginning of the Evolutionary or "Indrawing" stage, there is manifested the Law of Individualization—that is, the tendency to separate into Units of Force, so that finally that which left THE ALL as unindividualized energy returns to its source as countless highly developed Units of Life, having risen higher and higher in the scale by means of Physical, Mental and Spiritual Evolution.

The ancient Hermetists use the word "Meditation" in describing the process of the mental creation of the Universe in the Mind of THE ALL, the word "Contemplation" also being frequently employed. But the idea intended seems to be that of the employment of the Divine Attention. "Attention" is a word derived from the Latin root, meaning "to reach out; to stretch out," and so the act of Attention is really a mental "reaching out; extension" of mental energy, so that the underlying idea is readily understood when we examine into the real meaning of "Attention."

The Hermetic Teachings regarding the process of Evolution are that, THE ALL, having meditated upon the beginning of the Creation—having thus established the material foundations of the Universe—having thought it into existence—then gradually awakens or rouses from its Meditation and in so doing starts into manifestation the process of Evolution, on the material mental and spiritual planes, successively and in order. Thus the upward movement begins—and all begins to move Spiritward. Matter becomes less gross; the Units spring into being; the combinations begin to form; Life appears and manifests in higher and higher forms; and Mind becomes more and more in evidence—the vibrations constantly becoming higher. In short, the entire process of Evolution, in all of its phases, begins, and proceeds according to the established "Laws of the Indrawing" process. All of this occupies aeons upon aeons of Man's time, each aeon containing countless millions of years, but yet the Illumined inform us that the entire creation, including Involution and Evolution, of an Universe, is but "as the twinkle of the eye" to THE ALL. At the end of countless cycles of aeons of time, THE ALL withdraws its Attention—its Contemplation and Meditation—of the Universe, for the Great Work is finished—and All is withdrawn into THE ALL from which it emerged. But Mystery of Mysteries—the Spirit of each soul is not annihilated, but is infinitely expanded—the Created and the Creator are merged. Such is the report of the Illumined!

The above illustration of the "meditation," and subsequent "awakening from meditation," of THE ALL, is of course but an attempt of the teachers to describe the Infinite process by a finite example. And, yet: "As Below, so Above." The difference is merely in degree. And just as THE ALL arouses itself from the meditation upon the Universe, so does Man (in time) cease from manifesting upon the Material Plane, and withdraws himself more and more into the Indwelling Spirit, which is indeed "The Divine Ego."

There is one more matter of which we desire to speak in this lesson, and that comes very near to an invasion of the Metaphysical field of speculation, although our purpose is merely to show the futility of such speculation. We allude to the question which inevitably comes to the mind of all thinkers who have ventured to seek the Truth. The question is: "WHY does THE ALL create Universes" The question may be asked in different forms, but the above is the gist of the inquiry.

Men have striven hard to answer this question, but still there is no answer worthy of the name. Some have imagined that THE ALL had something to gain by it, but this is absurd, for what could THE ALL gain that it did not already possess? Others have sought the answer in the idea that THE ALL "wished something to love" and others that it created for pleasure, or amusement; or because it "was lonely" or to manifest its power;—all puerile explanations and ideas, belonging to the childish period of thought.

Others have sought to explain the mystery by assuming that THE ALL found itself "compelled" to create, by reason of its own "internal nature"—its "creative instinct." This idea is in advance of the others, but its weak point lies in the idea of THE ALL being "compelled" by anything, internal or external. If its "internal nature," or "creative instinct," compelled it to do anything, then the "internal nature" or "creative instinct" would be the Absolute, instead of THE ALL, and so accordingly that part of the proposition falls. And, yet, THE ALL does create and manifest, and seems to find some kind of satisfaction in so doing. And it is difficult to escape the conclusion that in some infinite degree it must have what would correspond to an "inner nature," or "creative instinct," in man, with correspondingly infinite Desire and Will. It could not act unless it Willed to Act; and it would not Will to Act, unless it Desired to Act and it would not Desire to Act unless it obtained some Satisfaction thereby. And all of these things would belong to an "Inner Nature," and might be postulated as existing according to the Law of Correspondence. But, still, we prefer to think of THE ALL as acting entirely FREE from any influence, internal as well as external. That is the problem which lies at the root of difficulty—and the difficulty that lies at the root of the problem.

Strictly speaking, there cannot be said to be any "Reason" whatsoever for THE ALL to act, for a "reason" implies a "cause," and THE ALL is above Cause and Effect, except when it Wills to become a Cause, at which time the Principle is set into motion. So, you see, the matter is Unthinkable, just as THE ALL is Unknowable. Just as we say THE ALL merely "IS"—so we are compelled to say that "THE ALL ACTS BECAUSE IT ACTS." At the last, THE ALL is All Reason in Itself; All Law in Itself; All Action in Itself—and it may be said, truthfully, that THE ALL is Its Own Reason; its own Law; its own Act—or still further, that THE ALL; Its Reason; Its Act; is Law; are ONE, all being names for the same thing. In the opinion of those who are giving you these present lessons, the answer is locked up in the INNER SELF of THE ALL, along with its Secret of Being. The Law of Correspondence, in our opinion, reaches only to that aspect of THE ALL, which may be spoken of as "The Aspect of BECOMING." Back of that Aspect is "The Aspect of BEING" in which all Laws are lost in LAW; all Principles merge into PRINCIPLE—and THE ALL; PRINCIPLE; and BEING; are IDENTICAL, ONE AND THE SAME. Therefore, Metaphysical speculation on this point is futile. We go into the matter here, merely to show that we recognize the question, and also the absurdity of the ordinary answers of metaphysics and theology.

In conclusion, it may be of interest to our students to learn that while some of the ancient, and modern, Hermetic Teachers have rather inclined in the direction of applying the Principle of Correspondence to the question, with the result of the "Inner Nature" conclusion,—still the legends have it that HERMES, the Great, when asked this question by his advanced students, answered them by PRESSING HIS LIPS TIGHTLY TOGETHER and saying not a word, indicating that there WAS NO ANSWER. But, then, he may have intended to apply the axiom of his philosophy, that: "The lips of Wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding," believing that even his advanced students did not possess the Understanding which entitled them to the Teaching. At any rate, if Hermes possessed the Secret, he failed to impart it, and so far as the world is concerned THE LIPS OF HERMES ARE CLOSED regarding it. And where the Great Hermes hesitated to speak, what mortal may dare to teach?

But, remember, that whatever be the answer to this problem, if indeed there be an answer the truth remains that: "While All is in THE ALL, it is equally true that THE ALL is in All.

The Teaching on this point is emphatic. And, we may add the concluding words of the quotation: "To him who truly understands this truth, hath come great knowledge."

Alright, it's a Work in Progress, but So is Life. It'll Be Fine.

DOCTOR:
All right, it's a work in progress, but so is life.
It'll be fine.
Oh! I got these downstairs. One must work.
(A large collection of keys.)
DOCTOR: You can figure out how to work a crane, right? Go.
(She heads out along the horizontal long jib.)
DOCTOR: Yep, way too high.

[Building site]

GRAHAM: Grace, she explicitly said not to come back. It's not safe.
(The Gathering Coil is partway up the second crane.)
GRACE: Look, it's swapped cranes. It's trying to bring it down. We have to stop it.
(She hands her florescent vest to Graham and storms off.)

[Crane cab]

(Karl has reached the far end of the jib. Yasmin has been trying all the keys in the ignition.)
YASMIN: Last one. (it works) Get in. Okay, so now we just need to swing the arm round to meet that one.
(Ryan has been doing searches on his phone.)
RYAN: Right, I think this shows us. Ready?
YASMIN: Every day's a learning day.

[Crane jib]

DOCTOR: Wrong way! Wrong way!

[Crane cab]

RYAN: Wrong way. Wrong way!
YASMIN: I know. Shut up.

[Crane jibs]

DOCTOR: Hiya, again.
RYAN: What's going on?
DOCTOR: When the arms line up, just step across.
(The Gathering Coil manages to short-circuit the crane, and the jib halts about two metres lower than Karl's jib.)
KARL: How am I supposed to get across there now?
DOCTOR: When I said step, obviously I meant jump. Jump across.
KARL: I can't do that!
DOCTOR: Of course you can. Stand up, quick jump. Chop chop, I'll catch you.
KARL: I dunno. I'm not great with heights.
DOCTOR: What?
KARL: It's my dad's company.
(Tzim-Sha is now on his jib.)
DOCTOR: Pop on over.
KARL: Okay. I am special.
DOCTOR: Yes, you are.
KARL: I am brave, and I am gonna jump.
DOCTOR: No time like the present.
(But just as Karl has launched himself into the air, Tzim-Sha grabs him by the collar.)
DOCTOR: Let him go!
(Karl is dragged away.)
KARL: I'm sorry!
DOCTOR: If you want something doing...
KARL: Please! Help!
(The Doctor takes a run up, and just manages to grab onto Karl's crane.)
ALL: Oh, my God.
DOCTOR: These legs definitely used to be longer.
(She hauls herself onto the jib.)
DOCTOR: Oi, Tim Shaw, you stop right there.
(Tzim-Sha takes off his faceplate.)
KARL: Oh, he's got a face of teeth!
DOCTOR: I know. I've got this. Let him go... or I destroy this.
(Searches pockets.)
DOCTOR: Really need a new coat. This.
(A glowing red gizmo.)
DOCTOR: The recall from the pod you travelled in. I took it out. Without this, you can't get home. Yeah, see? Now you're worried. If I fall, this falls with me. Then you're stuck.

[Building site]

(Graham and Grace unpack the cables, battery and stuff they used on the roof top against the Gathering Coil.)
GRACE: Yeah?
GRAHAM: Yeah. Come on.

[Crane jib]

DOCTOR: What do you do with them, your human trophies?
TZIM-SHA: They're held in stasis in our trophy chambers, on the cusp between life and death.
DOCTOR: Left to rot? How completely obscene.
TZIM-SHA: They're not important.
KARL: Hey! I'm important.
DOCTOR: If I don't stop you, your people will keep doing this.
TZIM-SHA: Give me the circuit or I detonate the bombs placed in your friends.
DOCTOR: More weapons. Did your pet put one in Karl too?
KARL: What?
TZIM-SHA: There was no need. He was tagged. He is the trophy.
DOCTOR: I thought as much. Right, you detonate the bombs, I'll destroy the recall. So, what are we going to do?

[Building site]

(They break into the high voltage shed.)
GRACE: Right, you rewired the house, so you sort things out this end, I'll climb up.
GRAHAM: I don't want you doing that.
GRACE: Graham, Ryan's in danger. We don't have time to argue. Give me t'signal when you're ready.
GRAHAM: Okay.
(Grace kisses him.)
GRACE: Is it wrong to be enjoying this?
GRAHAM: Yes!

[Crane jib]

DOCTOR: Poor Tim Shaw. The wannabe leader who has to cheat because he knows he's unworthy. See, that's why I know you won't detonate. Although, you could prove me wrong cos we're all capable of the most incredible change. We can evolve while still staying true to who we are. We can honour who we've been and choose who we want to be next. Now's your chance. How about it?
TZIM-SHA: Who are you?
DOCTOR: Yes. I'm glad you asked that again. Bit of adrenaline, dash of outrage, and a hint of panic knitted my brain back together. I know exactly who I am. I'm the Doctor. Sorting out fair play throughout the universe. Now please, get off this planet while you still have a choice.
TZIM-SHA: I choose to win.
(Tzim-Sha presses an activation button, and a few moments later drops his faceplate and starts to scream in pain.)
DOCTOR: Sorry. I removed those nasty little things from my friends - Swiss Army sonic, now with added Sheffield steel - And I implanted them back in your creature. Your transference wasn't just data, it was physical. You got everything transferred to you, including five tiny bombs. You had a choice. You did this to yourself. Go home.
(The Doctor throws the recall circuit to Tzim-Sha, who has started to melt. Karl kicks at him and Tzim-Sha falls through the broken hand-rail, putting the recall circuit onto his chest and vanishing.)
KARL: I am important!
DOCTOR: You had no right to do that.

[Building site]

(Grace has climbed up to the Gathering Coil.)
GRACE: Put a bomb in me, would you? Now, Graham!
(Graham throws the master switch and electricity surges, starting to short out the Coil.)
GRACE: It's working!
(But when the Coil falls apart and drops, it knocks Grace down to the ground too, and it is not a short fall. Graham rushes to her.)
GRACE: Don't be cross with me.
GRAHAM: I'm not cross, baby. I'm not cross.
GRACE: Promise me... you won't be scared.
GRAHAM: What do you mean?
GRACE: Without me.
GRAHAM: Grace. Grace...
(Ryan and Yasmin run over, then the Doctor.)

[YouTube channel]

RYAN: So, today I want to talk about the greatest woman I ever met. Smart, funny, caring. Proper special. My nan. Because... she died.

[Ryan's bedroom]

RYAN: First me mum six years ago, and now me nan. It's like the best people get taken first. I had a lot to learn from her and I were looking forward to that. She died like she lived, trying to help other people. I love you, Nan, and tomorrow I'm going out there for you.

[Moors]

(Amazingly, the bike is still rideable - but Ryan still keeps falling off, bless.)
RYAN: Three, two, one...
(The Doctor watches from a distance as Ryan keeps trying and falling and trying again.)

[Chapel]

DOCTOR: What time did your dad say he'd get here?
RYAN: Two hours ago.
DOCTOR: If he said he'll come...
RYAN: He says a lot of things. He's never been the best at being reliable. I mean, how can he not be here? She's his mum. She would've wanted him here. I want him here.
(The memorial service has started.)
GRAHAM: Lots of you knew Grace longer than me, so I can't stand here and pretend to know everything about her. I wasn't her first husband, but she said I would do for a second attempt. I can only tell you about the Grace I met, when I thought I didn't have much time left. The... the Grace that showed me life had more to offer, and... GRAHAM: Oh, well, er, I had cancer and er... Well, strictly speaking, I'm still in remission, three years gone. And Grace was my chemo nurse. That's where we met and fell in love. So by rights, I shouldn't even be here.
YASMIN: Have you got family?
DOCTOR: No. Lost them a long time ago.
RYAN: How do you cope with that?
DOCTOR: I carry them with me. What they would've thought and said and done. I make them a part of who I am. So even though they're gone from the world, they're never gone from me.
GRAHAM: That's the sort of thing Grace would have said.
YASMIN: So everything we saw, everything we've lied to people about, is this normal for you?
DOCTOR: I'm just a traveller. Sometimes I see things need fixing, I do what I can. Except right now, I'm a traveller without a ship. I've stayed too long. I should get back to finding my Tardis.
YASMIN: Doctor. Can I just say, you really need to get out of those clothes.
DOCTOR: Right, yeah. It's been a long time since I bought women's clothes.

[Charity shop]

(Lots of stuff being thrown out from behind the changing room curtain.)
DOCTOR [OC]: Not that. Not that, not that. Ah, not that. Oh! Yes! Now, that's what I want.
(She comes out wearing a really weird ensemble of a top with two horizontal stripes across her biggest part, a pair of half-mast flares held up by braces, and a pale grey long coat with hood. Still in the Doc Martens, though.)
YASMIN: That's what you're going with?
DOCTOR: Yep! Got any cash? Empty pockets. Also, I've been thinking about my Tardis. So you think you guys might be able to help me?

[Industrial unit]

(The Doctor is putting the final touches to a very Heath-Robinson lash-up. Graham is clutching a car battery.)
GRAHAM: How long have we got to stand here for? I'm getting cramp.
DOCTOR: Seriously, Graham, trying to concentrate here.
RYAN: Do you understand what she's doing?
DOCTOR: My ship uses a particular type of energy. I've tracked that energy trail from the moment I lost it to where it is now. Now, given this is a transport pod, I'm configuring it to send me to the planet where my ship seems to have ended up.
YASMIN: You're going to another planet?
DOCTOR: Well, trying to. Except Stenza technology's really annoying and super hard to decipher. 139 layers, seven of which don't make sense. Right. Graham.
GRAHAM: Yeah?
DOCTOR: Clamp those onto there.
(Crocodile clips onto the battery terminals.)
GRAHAM: All right.
DOCTOR: Yaz, thread the cable onto the top. Ryan, you turn on the switch. Okay, you three, I'm almost gonna miss ya.
(A microwave beeps.)
DOCTOR: That's it. It's connected up. It should work.
(She sets the timer on the microwave.)
DOCTOR: Moment of truth, then. Wish me luck. And goodbye. Oh, deep breath. Not you lot. Me.
(She inhales, holds it and activates the Sheffield Sonic. The microwave timer reaches zero, power surges through cables... and they all disappear.
The Doctor opens her eyes to find she is floating in the vacuum of space - with her three new companions close by.)

GRIM

grim (adj.)
Old English grimm "fierce, cruel, savage; severe, dire, painful," from Proto-Germanic *grimma- (source also of Old Saxon, Old Frisian, Old High German, German grimm "grim, angry, fierce," Old Norse grimmr "stern, horrible, dire," Swedish grym "fierce, furious"), from PIE *ghremno- "angry," which is perhaps imitative of the sound of rumbling thunder (compare Greek khremizein "to neigh," Old Church Slavonic vuzgrimeti "to thunder," Russian gremet' "thunder").

A weaker word now than it once was; sense of "dreary, gloomy" first recorded late 12c. It also had a verb form in Old English, grimman (class III strong verb; past tense gramm, past participle grummen), and a noun, grima "goblin, specter," perhaps also a proper name or attribute-name of a god, hence its appearance as an element in place names.

Grim reaper as a figurative phrase for "death" is attested by 1847 (the association of grim and death goes back at least to 17c.). A Middle English expression for "have recourse to harsh measures" was to wend the grim tooth (early 13c.).

grim (n.)
"spectre, bogey, haunting spirit," 1620s, from grim (adj.).

She Really is An Exceptional Woman

Notice the ORDER in which those two utterances come —

She brought him some food, before finding out if he thinks he is hungry or  not.

Because he should be.

And she knows that he is.

You’re Afraid —

Afraid that you’ll NEVER be as Powerful as DARTH VADER!

BILL MOYERS:
I’ve had psychotherapists tell me that they use “Star Wars” sometimes to deal with the problems of their child patients.

And they’ve said that the most popular character among the children is
Darth Vader.

GEORGE LUCAS:
Well, Children Love Power
because Children are The Powerless.

And so their fantasies all centre on having Power.

And who’s more Powerful than Darth Vader, you know?

And, some, you know, will be attracted to Luke Skywalker because he’s The Good Guy

But ultimately, we all know that Darth Vader’s more Powerful than he is.

And as time goes on, you discover that

He is more powerful because he’s the —

He’s The Ultimate Father Who is All Powerful.

BILL MOYERS:
This is where I disagree somewhat with our friend Joseph Campbell who said that :

" The Young Man has to slay His Father before he can become an adult himself. "

It seems to me, and I think you’re right on here, that —

The Young Man has to identify —
has to recognize and acknowledge that

He is His Father and is not His Father.

"TO BE OR NOT TO BE?"

PADME:
I brought you something.
Are you hungry?

The shifter broke.
Life seems so much simpler when...
You're Fixing Things.

I'm Good at Fixing Things.

Always was.

But I couldn't.

Why'd she have to die?

Why couldn't I Save Her?

I know I could have.

PADME:
Sometimes there are things...
No-one can fix.

You're Not All-Powerful, Ani.

Well, I Should Be.

Someday I Will Be.

I will be The Most Powerful Jedi ever!

I Promise you.

I will even learn to stop people from dying!

Anakin.

It's all Obi-Wan's fault!
He's jealous!
He's holding me back!

(CLATTERS)

(ANAKIN SOBBING)

What's wrong, Ani?

(VOICE BREAKING)
I...

I Killed Them.

I Killed Them All.

They're Dead.

Every single one of them.

And not just The Men.

But The Women...

and The Children too.

THEY'RE LIKE ANIMALS!

And I SLAUGHERED Them like animals!

I HATE Them!

(DARTH VADER THEME PLAYS)
(EXHALES)

To Be Angry is to Be Human.

I'm a Jedi.

I know I'm Better Than This.

CLIEGG LARS:
I know wherever you are...
it's become A Better Place.

You were The Most Loving Partner A Man Could Ever Have.

Good-bye, My Darling Wife.
And Thank You.

I wasn't Strong Enough to save you, Mom.

ANAKIN: I wasn't strong enough.

But I promise...

I won't fail again.

I miss you...

so much.

(R2-D2 BEEPING)

R2?

What are you doing here?

(BEEPING CONTINUES)

It seems that he is carrying a...

message from an Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Hmm. Master Ani,

does that name mean anything to you?

From Jesus to Paul

I seen through junkies, I been through it all

I seen Religion from Jesus to Paul

Don't let them fool you with Dope and Cocaine

No one can harm you, feel your own pain

Pre-Apocalypse

Virginia

Paul grew up as an orphan in a shared housing in Virginia. For the vast majority of his life, Paul grew up around a large number of children which he became accustomed to, although he generally struggled in forming connections with other people. He is also openly gay, although he still found difficulty in several relationships with boyfriends.[2]

As a young adult, he managed to gather several friends where he received the nickname "Jesus" due to his stereotypical Western resemblance to the religious figure Jesus Christ. Paul trained in martial arts and became a skilled hand-to-hand combatant, he also learned the art of pick-pocketing and escapology.[3]

Post-Apocalypse

At some point after the outbreak, Paul journeyed to a safe zone named the Hilltop Colony upon where he settled into and thus became effectively integrated with the fellow residents of the community. Paul quickly befriended the community leader Gregory and the two developed a working partnership and thus he proved to become an invaluable member of the farming community.

Benefitting from his abilities and experience, Paul was appointed as the community's recruiter where he was assigned to scavenge for supplies as well as to locate other communities and settlements to trade with in order to establish a network to help contribute towards the Hilltop Colony in order to help maintain and prosper throughout the apocalypse.

Paul was present at the time of the arrival of a notorious group named "The Saviors" who operated on behalf of a man named Negan. During a meeting conducted by Gregory alongside a dispatched squadron, The Saviors demanded half of the Hilltop Colony's supplies in exchange for leaving the farming community unscathed. Though initially reluctant to agree, they eventually complied after witnessing the public execution of Rory, a 16-year-old resident of the community.

Following this event, the Hilltop Colony entered into a period of dread and subjugation and thus were forced to comply under Negan's corrupt rule, as a result of their limited resources and manpower they were unable to rebel against their save oppressors. Throughout the following months, Paul alongside the other residents begrudgingly worked to gather supplies in their desperate struggle in order to compensate with Negan's demands.

Season 6

"The Next World"

Jesus is first seen running into Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon where he is held at gunpoint by the pair. He tells them that he was being chased by walkers and they are following him closely. After a brief and tense introduction, gunshots can be heard, prompting Rick and Daryl to investigate. However, upon finding out that that it was just firecrackers, they soon realized it was a ruse that allowed Jesus to steal Rick's keys and make off with the truck of supplies.

After a long run, Rick and Daryl are able to track him down, bind him, and win back the food truck. As they approach a small farm, they realize that Jesus is on top of the truck. When Rick slams the brake pedal, he falls onto the front of the truck. He then tries to escape as Daryl chases after him, Rick killing the nearby walkers. As Jesus and Daryl scuffle inside the truck, a walker emerges behind Daryl. He tells Daryl to duck, which he does, and shoots the walker, saving him. As they continue to fight for the food truck, Jesus accidentally releases the emergency brake and the vehicle rolls into a nearby pond and sinks. As the truck is falling into the pond, the door hits Jesus and knocks him out cold. Daryl suggests that they leave him behind. But Rick points out that Jesus saved Daryl and he begrudgingly agrees.

Later on, he is sitting in the back, tied up as Daryl guards him and Rick drives them back to Alexandria.

They carry him to the infirmary and let Denise check him out. He is later brought to the townhouse basement where Rick and Daryl leave water and a note next to his unconscious body. When Rick and Michonne are lying naked in their bed, Jesus walks into the room and tells Rick to wake up. As Rick and Michonne leap up and grab their weapons, Jesus says, "We should talk."

"Knots Untie"

In Rick's house, Jesus waits for Michonne and Rick to get dressed. Rick's son Carl discovers Jesus and points a gun at his head as the others arrive. Michonne and Rick emerge from the bedroom and assures everyone that Jesus just wants to talk.

Jesus tells Rick's group that he's part of a community that raises livestock and crops, and his job is to search for other settlements with whom to open trade. He offers to take them to his community, the Hilltop, to prove he is telling the truth. Rick, Daryl, Michonne, Glenn Rhee, Maggie Greene, and Abraham Ford board the community's RV with Jesus.

Rick slows the motor home as they approach an overturned car. Jesus recognizes it as belonging to the Hilltop and desperately begins searching the wreckage for his people. The group finds four of Jesus' people, one of whom is injured. Freddie, one of the newcomers, tells Jesus that he saw a vision of his dead wife when he thought he was going to die. The motor home gets stuck in mud, forcing the group to disembark. Jesus points ahead to a massive wall. "That's the Hilltop," he says.

Jesus leads the group to the main gate, where spear-wielding guards order Rick's group to disarm. Jesus tells Rick they can keep their guns and confides that his community ran out of ammo months ago. The gates open, revealing a large manor house and a farming community inside. Jesus explains that the house was once a living history museum. Jesus takes the group inside, where they meet Gregory, the community's leader. Gregory orders Rick's group to clean up before meeting with him. Jesus assures Rick and Daryl that he can convince Gregory to make a fair trade. They hear a commotion outside. "They're back," a resident tells Gregory.

When Ethan comes back from a mission to Negan, Ethan stabs Gregory in the gut and Rick kills him. Jesus calms astonished residents by pointing out that Ethan initiated the bloodshed. In the library, Jesus explains that Negan is the head of a group called the Saviors, who agreed not to attack the Hilltop in exchange for half of their supplies. Rick's group offers to rescue Craig and wipe out the Saviors in exchange for food, medicine and supplies. Jesus agrees to take the offer to Gregory. Later, Jesus reports that Gregory wants to discuss the offer with Maggie.

"Not Tomorrow Yet"

Jesus is first seen in the church in Alexandria as Rick tries to convince the Alexandrians that they need to fight against the Saviors.

On the road, Jesus and Andy are trying to decide which of three decapitated walker heads that they have collected, as part of their plan to fool the Saviors, looks most like Gregory. Jesus picks a head but remarks that Gregory's nose is slightly different. Rick grabs the head and pummels the nose as Jesus and Andy watch in shock, figuring Andy can tell the Saviors that he broke Gregory's nose in a struggle. Andy remarks to Rick that "the Saviors, they're scary, but those pricks got nothing on you."

Later, Jesus, Gabriel Stokes, Tara Chambler, Andy, and Craig wait outside in a car. Jesus listens as Tara confesses to Gabriel that she told her girlfriend Denise Cloyd that she loved her, but only did so to hide her misgivings about their mission to kill the Saviors. Jesus asks Tara if she does love Denise, to which Tara says she does. "So you know what you're fighting for," Jesus says.

When the alarm inside the Saviors base is activated, Tara says that they need to get back to the Hilltop so that the deal is still on. Jesus declines and sends Andy and Craig back to the Hilltop alone, staying behind to help the others. Once inside, he shoots a weakened Savior, saving Glenn and Heath. “So this is the next world,” Jesus comments.

Season 7

"Go Getters"

Jesus approaches to Maggie and Sasha to where Glenn and Abraham are buried and places flowers on the graves. Gregory arrives and demands to know why Maggie's people didn't wipe out all the Saviors, and whether they know about his deal with Rick. He tells Maggie and Sasha to burn Glenn and Abraham's bodies and orders them to leave the Hilltop by morning. Gregory tells Jesus that if they leave, he has plausible deniability, and the Saviors won’t think they colluded to take down their outpost.

Sasha makes her bed in Jesus' trailer, where she and Maggie are staying the night. She asks Jesus to change Gregory's mind and offers to earn Maggie’s keep by scavenging for The Hilltop. Jesus gives her Abraham's brake light necklace. Maggie asks Jesus why Hilltop residents burn their dead -- "What do you have to remember them by?" Jesus simply says, "Us." The Saviors secretly leads walkers flooding in through the front gate, drawn by the music, Jesus helps Sasha and Maggie kill walkers. When they arrive with Simon leading them, Gregory tells Jesus to hide Maggie and Sasha in the foyer closet, however Jesus secretly hides them in his closet. Jesus watches as Gregory leads Simon to the clost, he finds boxes of scotch. Simon says Negan will be pleased and orders a nearby Savior to put the liquor in Negan's truck. On his way out, Simon orders Gregory to kneel, which he does with little resistance. He and the Saviors leave.

He releases Maggie and Sasha from Gregory's bedroom closet. Gregory yells at Jesus for hiding them there instead of the foyer closet. Jesus stands up to Gregory and forces him to let Maggie and Sasha stay. Jesus threatens to reveal Gregory's deal with Alexandria, stripping him of his plausible deniability. Suddenly, Maggie punches Gregory in the face, reaches into his pocket and takes Glenn's watch, which Gregory stole from the grave.

Jesus tells Maggie and Sasha that initially, he couldn't imagine anyone but Gregory running the Hilltop. "I can now," he says cryptically. Maggie leaves. Sasha asks Jesus to find out where Negan lives, but to keep it a secret from Maggie. Jesus agrees to follow the truck that's heading back to the Saviors' compound.

The Saviors leave the Hilltop. Jesus sneaks into the truck that's bound for their compound. He hears a voice say, "Hey," and looks towards the back of the truck to see Carl peeking out from behind some boxes.

"Sing Me a Song"

Jesus and Carl emerge from their hiding spots in the back of the cargo truck. Jesus pours syrup on the ground behind the truck, leaving a trail. He proposes they jump out of the moving truck and follow on foot. Carl is hesitant and asks Jesus to show him how it's done. Jesus leaps out; he sees Carl waving goodbye, from the truck, and realizes he's been played. Negan and Carl prepare to leave in the cargo truck. On their way out, Jesus is shown hiding on top of the truck and stays behind at the compound.

"Hearts Still Beating"

Jesus finds Daryl in the midst of bashing in Fat Joey's head. Daryl grabs Joey's gun (Rick's Colt Python) and hops on a motorcycle. Daryl and Jesus leave the compound. Rick, Michonne, Carl, Rosita and Tara enter the Hilltop and reunite with Maggie, Sasha and Enid. Daryl and Jesus come out to greet them. Daryl gives Rick the gun he retrieved from Fat Joey. Together, they stride towards the mansion.

"Rock in the Road"

Jesus is seen with Rick and the others in the Hilltop mansion, trying to get Gregory to join the fight against the Saviors. Jesus even calls out Gregory, sarcastically calling him brave. After Gregory decides not to help, Jesus and the others learn Enid had been asking Hilltop members to join the fight, to which they decided to do. Jesus reveals to them a long-range walkie-talkie stolen from the Saviors; they can listen in and hear if Negan dispatches his men to Alexandria

Afterwords, Jesus then decides to take Rick and the group to the Kingdom, to meet Ezekiel. He leads them to the outskirts of the Kingdom, where they are greeted by Richard and Alvaro. Jesus makes introductions and explains that they have similar interests. After some hesitation, Richard invites them to follow him. Richard, assuming Rick is interested in becoming a trade partner, confides in Jesus. He stresses their need to battle the Saviors. Jesus assures Richard that he has good news.

When taken in to meet Ezekiel, he is happy to see Jesus and asks if Rick and his friends are new allies, he says they are. Jesus introduces him to Rick and requests Ezekiel to join in on Rick's plan to fight the Saviors, which Ezekiel ponders heavily. Ezekiel reprimands Jesus for telling Rick about his deal with the Saviors. They plead their case; in the process, Richard urges Ezekiel to fight the Saviors before things get worse. However, Ezekiel is reluctant to violate the peace he holds with the Saviors and refuses the offer, but he offers asylum in the Kingdom to Daryl. Jesus and the others leave, while Daryl stays at the Kingdom. On their way back to Hilltop, they encounter a group of cars blocking the road with a wire that, when pushed, will set off explosives, set by the Saviors. Jesus and the others are able to disarm the explosives, but when walkers close in on them and Saviors heading to Alexandria, Jesus and Sasha were told to head back to Hilltop on foot by Rick.

"The Other Side"

Jesus and Maggie work on plans for the future of the community. Gradually, the people of Hilltop begin to look to her as a leader as she gives residents knife-throwing lessons, in preparation for the war against the Saviors. In Jesus' trailer, Maggie falls asleep while working at the kitchen table. Jesus hands Sasha his map of Negan's compound.

Maggie apologizes to Jesus for taking over his trailer. Having grown up in a group home, it doesn't bother him. With Maggie, Sasha and Enid, he feels close to people for the first time. Maggie leaves to speak with the blacksmith about making spears they can trade with the Kingdom for body armor.

Jesus and Enid catches Sasha taking some bullets hidden in a book. Jesus allows her to take the bullets, but he begs Sasha to delay her mission until more people can join her, however Sasha refuses. Jesus doesn't stop her and leaves. Enid warns Sasha that she's going to tell Maggie what's going on, but she'll give Sasha a ten-minute head start. Outside, Kal warns everyone that the Saviors are coming.

Jesus watches as the Saviors leave with Harlan Carson. Gregory, who allowed them to take him, shifts around uncomfortably, sensing their disappointment.

Gregory summons Jesus to his office and hands him job assignments for the newcomers. Jesus accuses Gregory of letting the Saviors take Dr. Carson and splitting up groups to protect himself. Gregory warns Jesus against talking back to him. Gregory says he's realized they're no longer friends.

As Jesus leaves, Daryl suddenly appears to him, asking where Sasha and Rosita are.

"Something They Need"

After Tara tells Rick about the arsenal at Oceanside, they lead a group of Alexandrians to the distant community. Jesus joins alongside them in order to acquire the guns and people to win the war against the Saviors.

Jesus voices his regrets to Daryl about Rosita and Sasha, chastising himself for not stopping their attack against Negan. Daryl assures Jesus that Sasha is a good shot and guesses that they could be back at the Hilltop.

Later, Rick's group sets off the explosives near the Oceanside walls. Jesus and Daryl capture Beatrice and Kathy as the other residents flee. They are able to round up the residents and Rick assures them that he doesn't plan to hurt anyone but they have something they need. Natania appears, holding Tara at gunpoint. Cyndie tells her people that Rick's group wants to fight the Saviors. Beatrice suggests they join the fight but Natania refuses to lose more people to the Saviors.

Michonne warns Rick that walkers are approaching. Jesus along with Rick's group and the Oceansiders work together and take down the walkers. Beatrice hands Rick his knife back and they shake hands. Natania angrily concedes and allows Rick's group to take their guns but she remains unconvinced that they won't fight.

Rick's group returns to Alexandria late at night. Rosita opens the gate for them. Jesus asks about Sasha's whereabouts, but Rosita doesn't answer and tells them there is someone there to see them.

Rosita leads the group to the jail, where Dwight is being held. Daryl charges at him but is held back by Rick and Michonne as Rosita insists he wants to help them.

"The First Day of the Rest of Your Life"

Jesus is with the group interrogating Dwight in the prison cell, Rosita announces that the Saviors have Sasha. She says that she doesn't trust Dwight, but Jesus reasons he may be their only chance to get Sasha back.

Jesus reviews Rick's plan with Maggie and Enid as they watch over Judith. She considers their options and contemplates joining the fight at Alexandria. Jesus remarks that he's happy she is the one making the tough decisions, as Gregory is noticeably absent. Enid places Glenn's pocket watch in her hand as she leaves the room with Judith.

Jesus arrives with Maggie and the Hilltop fighters just in time to join the fight against the Saviors alongside The Kingdom, gunning down Saviors that was about to kill Rick. Maggie yells orders to the fighters as Negan notices she is alive and well.

After the Saviors and the Scavengers have fled, Maggie and Jesus track Sasha down in the woods. Jesus pins her down and Maggie's eyes fill with tears as she puts her down for good. He later attends her funeral.

Jesus is present when Rick, Maggie and Ezekiel stand on a podium and address the crowd as the leaders of their respective communities: Alexandria, the Hilltop and the Kingdom, united and ready for an all out war.
