Art, Myth and Fan-Fiction — Why Does It Exist?

This is fundamentally the difference between Art, Myth and Fan-fiction — Why Does It Exist?

Myths more or less write themselves (like the Legendary Luke Skywalker, who undergoes a Transfiguration in The Last Jedi by dying, and thus goes from being a merely Legendary Figure (as well as being a real man), to being a Mythic and Mythological Hero — Because the qualifying requirement for Hero status, ever since the earliest epics and sagas of the Ancient World is that you have to DEAD.

You have to be dead, and have a tomb that pilgrims can venerate when they journey to visit your gravesite — which is why William Shatner’s egoistic desire to resurrect Kirk’s corpse from it’s lonely unmarked resting place on Veridian III was such utter misguided folly.

That’s also why Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker vanish when they die, their heroic deaths achieving an act of Herculean, Quasi-Arthurian Apotheosis, eternally unifying their mortal existence with the heroic legend.

It’s also why Vikings, Hindus and countless other tribal cultures believe the highest honour that can be afforded to a fallen warrior king is to raise him up toward heaven, in both body and in spirit, atop a mighty funeral pyre — just as Hercules did, when ascending to Olympus.

But with anything below Myth, in the realm of ordinary storytelling, you have to justify each narrative development, every creative decision in terms of why it is happening to your characters —

Why Is This Happening to Them?

• What Purpose Does This Incident in the Lives of Your Characters Serve in Advancing their Journey Along Their Respective Paths?

• Why Do I (as The Storyteller) Feel The Need to Tell it?

And the answer should NEVER be “Because I want to Tell it.” — which is ultimately the fundamental motivation behind ALL FanFic / Shipping / SlashFiction.

If it exists, solely or primarily owing to the fan-author’s personal, selfish reasons, not only are you doing a disservice and are perpetrating an abuse of the characters and the world you claim to love so much, you are doing so to the injurious cost of the needs of The Story itself — the Marxist social historian

Kevin Smith Tells The Story of a moment in time, back in the late-90s, during The SuperHero Dark Ages, before The MCU, when he was given a meeting  at Warner Bros., where he was offered the opportunity to develop a screenplay for one of the following two, front-line major marquee showcase A-List projects then-in-development — Either :

Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian

OR

Superman 5, aka Superman Lives.

Kev’s reply to the first project was spot-on in his contemptuous scornful dismissal :

“Didn’t We Say Everything That Needed to Be Said with The First Beetlejuice...? I mean, must we go tropical....?”

And of course, he is entirely right - the ‘creative’ ethos and rationale driving the decision to make the thing is exactly the same one at play with every other awful, soul-less half-assed rehash of a zany, madcap breakout hit fish-out of Water comedy flick of that era — Crocodile Dundee / The Mask / Home Alone / Ace Ventura : Pet Detective Made $200+ Million, so let’s make another one, but this time, with a completely different setting or situational circumstance to drive generate incidents, move the plot forward and make it SEEM new and different and fresh (even though it isn’t), usually by just reversing everything that the characters went through in the first movie (and thus undoing all of their character development by negating their character arc from the first one.

Which is why, with perhaps the sole exception of the second Addams Family movie, those quicky studio comedies were almost uniformly and without exception, TERRIBLE.... even Ghostbusters 2 is deeply mediocre.

The Secret of The Ancient Order of The Whills

222 INT. POLIS MASSA-
OBSERVATION DOME-NIGHT

On the isolated asteroid of Polis Massa, YODA meditates.

YODA:
Failed to stop the Sith Lord, I have.
Still much to learn, there is ...

QUI -GON: (V.O.)
Patience. You will have time.

I did not.

When I became one with the Force I made a great discovery.
With my training, you will be able to merge with The Force at will.

Your physical self will fade away, but you will still retain your consciousness.
You will become more powerful than any Sith.

YODA :
Eternal consciousness.

QUI-GON: (V.O.)
The ability to defy oblivion can be achieved, but only for oneself.

It was accomplished by a Shaman of the Whills.
It is a state acquired through compassion, not greed.

YODA :
. . . to become one with The Force, and influence still have . . .
A power greater than all, it is.

QUI-GON: (V.O.)
You will learn to let go of everything.
No attachment, no thought of self.
No physical self.

YODA:
A great Jedi Master, you have become, Qui-Gon Jinn.

Your apprentice I gratefully become.

YODA thinks about this for a minute, then BAIL ORGANA enters the room and breaks his meditation.

BAIL ORGANA:
Excuse me, Master Yoda.
Obi-Wan Kenobi has made contact.

223 EXT. MUSTAFAR-LANDING PLATFORM-DAY

The CLONES have placed ANAKIN in a medical capsule. They float the wounded Sith Lord into the belly of the IMPERIAL CRUISER.
DARTH SIDIOUS follows the capsule into the ship.
The ship takes off.

224 EXT. POLIS MASSA-LANDING PLATFORM-NIGHT

OBI-WAN lands the Naboo Cruiser on the landing platform of the isolated post of Polis Massa.

YODA and BAIL ORGANA, along with a FEW GROUND CREW, are waiting as the ramp lowers and OBI-WAN emerges, carrying the unconscious PADME in his arms, followed by ARTOO and THREEPIO.

BAIL ORGANA:
We'll take her to the medical center, quickly.

225 EXT. LANDING PLATFORM-CORUSCANT-IMPERIAL REHAB CENTER-DAY

The shuttle lands.
DARTH SIDIOUS and CLONE TROOPERS leave the shuttle.
ANAKIN's body is carried along in a floating medical capsule.

226 INT. POLIS MASSA-MEDICAL CENTER-NIGHT

POLIS MEDICS work, on PADME in an operating theater.
OBI-WAN and one of the MEDICAL DROIDS enter an observation room where BAIL and YODA are waiting.

MEDICAL DROID :
Medically, she is completely healthy.
For reasons we can't explain, we are losing her.

OBI-WAN :
She's dying?

MEDICAL DROID :
We don't know why.
She has lost the will to live.
We need to operate quickly if we are to save the babies.

BAIL ORGANA :
Babies??!!

MEDICAL DROID :
She's carrying twins.

YODA :
Save them, we must.
They are Our Last Hope.

The MEDICAL DROID rushes back to the operating room.
ARTOO and THREEPIO watch, greatly puzzled.

ARTOO BEEPS.

C-3PO :
It s some kind of reproductive process, I think.

227 INT. CORUSCANT-IMPERIAL REHAB CENTER-DAY

ANAKIN, in the medical capsule, is lifted onto a table in the Rehab Center.
DROIDS go to work on him.
ANAKIN has new legs and a new arm.

228 INT. POLIS MASSA-MEDICAL CENTER-NIGHT

The TWINS are being delivered as BAIL ORGANA, YODA, ARTOO, and THREEPIO watch.
OBI-WAN is in the operating theater with PADME.
He takes her hand.

OBI-WAN:
Don't give up, Padme.

PADME winces from the pain.
The MEDICAL DROID is holding the BABY.

MEDICAL DROID:
It's a boy.

PADME:
Luke . . .

PADME can only offer up a faint smile.
She struggles to touch the baby on the forehead.

MEDICAL DROID :
... and a girl.

PADME :
. . . Leia.

R2-D2, THREEPIO and BAIL ORGANA watch from an adjoining space.

229 INT. CORUSCANT-IMPERIAL REHAB CENTER-DAY

VADER, dressed in his black body armor, lies on the table.
Nose plugs are inserted and the mask drops from above, sealing tightly.
The helmet is fitted and VADER begins breathing.
230 INT. POLIS MASSA-MEDICAL CENTER-NIGHT

OBI WAN leans over PADME and softly speaks to her.

OBI-WAN:
 You have twins, Padme
They need you . . . hang on.

PADME:
I can't . . .

PADME winces again and takes OBI-WAN's hand.
She is holding Anakin's japor snippet.

OBI-WAN:
Save your energy.

PADME:
Obi-Wan . . . there . . . is good in him.
I know there is ... still . . .

A last gasp, and she dies.
Obi-Wan studies the necklace.

231 INT. CORUSCANT-IMPERIAL REHAB CENTER-DAY

DARTH SIDIOUS hovers around the periphery of a group of MEDICAL DROIDS who are working on ANAKIN.
DARTH SIDIOUS paces in the foreground.
A DROID approaches the Dark Lord.

MEDICAL DROID :
My Lord, the construction is finished ... he lives.

DARTH SIDIOUS :
Good. Good.

The DROID moves back to the table where DARTH VADER lies. The table begins to move upright.
DARTH SIDIOUS moves in next to DARTH VADER.

DARTH SIDIOUS: (continuing)
Lord Vader, can you hear me?

DARTH VADER, with his dark mask and helmet, moves up into the frame until he is in a CLOSEUP.

DARTH VADER:
Yes, My Master.

DARTH VADER looks around the room.

DARTH VADER: (continuing)
Where is Padme?
Is she safe, is she all right?

DARTH SIDIOUS moves closer to the half droid/half man.

DARTH SIDIOUS:
I'm afraid she died. ...
it seems in your anger, you killed her.

A LOW GROAN emanates from Vader's mask.
Suddenly everything in the room begins to implode, including some of the DROIDS.

DARTH VADER:
I couldn't have! She was alive!
I felt her! She was alive!
It's impossible! No!!!

VADER SCREAMS, breaks his bonds to the table, and steps forward, waving his hands, causing objects to fly around the room.
SIDIOUS deflects the objects, but some of the DROIDS aren't so lucky.
VADER'S PAINFUL SCREAMS echo throughout the Center.

232 EXT. NABOO-ALDERAAN STARCRUISER

BAIL ORGANA's Starcruiser approaches the city of Theed.

233 INT. ALDERAAN CRUISER-CONFERENCE ROOM

BAIL ORGANA, YODA, and OBI-WAN sit around a conference table.

YODA:
Pregnant, she must still appear. Hidden, safe, the children must be kept.

OBI-WAN:
We must take them somewhere the Sith will not sense their presence.

YODA:
Split up, they should be.

BAIL ORGANA:
My wife and I will take the girl.
We've always talked of adopting a baby girl.
She will be loved with us.

OBI-WAN:
And what of the boy?

YODA:
To Tatooine.
To his family, send him.

OBI-WAN:
I will take the child and watch over him.
Master Yoda, do you think Anakin's twins will be able to defeat Darth Sidious?

YODA:
Strong the Force runs, in the Skywalker line.
Hope, we can . . . Done, it is.
Until the time is right, disappear we will.

BAIL leaves the conference room.
YODA stops OBI-WAN.

YODA: (continuing)
Master Kenobi, wait a moment. In your solitude on Tatooine, training I have for you.

OBI-WAN:
Training??

YODA:
An old friend has learned the path to immortality.

OBI-WAN:
Who?

YODA:
One who has returned from the netherworld of the Force to train me . . . your old Master, Qui-Gon Jinn.

OBI-WAN:
Qui-Gon? But, how could he accomplish this?

YODA:
The secret of the Ancient Order of the Whills, he studied.
How to commune with him.
I will teach you.

OBI-WAN:
I will be able to talk with him?

YODA:
How to join The Force, he will train you.
Your consciousness you will retain, when one with the Force.
Even your physical self, perhaps.

Just Like Starting Overlook

“There's a thing in AA, something they read in a lot of meetings, The Promises.

Most of those promises have come true in my life:

We'll come to know a new freedom and new happiness, that's True.

But it also says in there:

We will not regret The Past nor wish to shut The Door on it.

And I have no wish to shut The Door on The Past.

I have been pretty upfront about my past.

But do I regret? I do. I do.

I regret the necessity."

Leo walks towards the agents.

As Bartlet waits, we hear the sound of several heavy doors closing.

Bartlet turns back towards the altar.

BARTLET :

[tired

You're a real Son of a Bitch, you know that?

He slowly walks up the center aisle.

She bought her first new car and you hit her with a drunk driver.

What? Was that supposed to be funny

"You cannot conceive, nor can I,

The Appalling Strangeness of The Mercy of God,"

says Graham Greene.

I don't know who's ass he was kissing there 'cause --

I think you're just vindictive.

Still, he feels pretty lucky, not least after a near-death experience in 1999.

King was walking down a road near his house when he was hit by a truck and thrown 14ft in the air.

There were no white lights, but it did get him thinking seriously about death.

"Our body knows things, and our brain knows things that don't have anything to do with conscious thought.

And I think that it's possible, when you die, that there is a final Exit Programme that goes into effect.

And that's what people are seeing when they see their relatives or a White Light or whatever it is.

In that sense, there may really be a heaven if you believe there's a Heaven, and a Hell if you believe there is one.

But there's some kind of transitional moment.

That idea that your whole life flashes before your eyes."

He smiles.

"Of course, they say about co-dependents – people who grow up around alcoholics – that somebody else's life does."

It is this moment of transition that Doctor Sleep deals with and the idea, like so many of King's, came from an incidental story in a newspaper.

This one was about

"a cat in a hospice that knows when people are going to die.

He would go into that patient's room and curl up next to them.

And I thought, that's a good advertisement for Death, for the emissary of death. I thought,

'I can make Dan the human equivalent of that cat, and call him Doctor Sleep.'

There was the book."

The idea of codependency may have its roots in the theories of German psychoanalyst Karen Horney. In 1941, she proposed that some people adopt what she termed a “Moving Toward” personality style to overcome their basic anxiety.
Essentially, these people move toward others by gaining their approval and affection, and subconsciously control them through their dependent style.

They are unselfish, virtuous, martyr-like, faithful, and turn the other cheek despite personal humiliation.

Approval from others is more important than respecting themselves.

The term codependency is most often identified with Alcoholics Anonymous and the realization that the Alcoholism was not solely about the addict but also about the family and friends who constitute a network for the alcoholic.

"The term “codependent” is used to describe how family members and friends might actually interfere with recovery by overhelping.”

The application of this term was very much driven by the self-help community.

Janet G. Woititz’s Adult Children of Alcoholics had come out in 1983 and sold two million copies while being on the New York Times bestseller list for 48 weeks.

Robin Norwood’s Women Who Love Too Much, 1985, sold two and a half million copies and spawned Twelve Step groups across the country for women “addicted” to men.

Melody Beattie popularized the concept of codependency in 1986 with the book Codependent No More which sold eight million copies.

In 1986, Timmen Cermak, M.D. wrote Diagnosing and Treating Co-Dependence: A Guide for Professionals.
In the book and an article published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs (Volume 18, Issue 1, 1986), Cermak argued (unsuccessfully) for the inclusion of codependency as a separate personality disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III-R; American Psychiatric Association, 1987).

Cermak’s book paved the way for a Twelve-step take-off program, called Co-Dependents Anonymous.

The first Co-Dependents Anonymous meeting was held October 22, 1986.

LEIA:
Luke.

LUKE:
Leia.

REY:
I'd rather not do this now.

KYLO REN:
Yeah, me too.

REY:
Why did you hate your father?
Do you have something, a cowl or something you can put on?
Why did you hate your father?
Give me an honest answer.
You had a father who loved you, he gave a damn about you.

KYLO REN:
I didn't hate him.

REY:
Then why?

KYLO REN:
Why, what?
Why, what?
Say it.

REY:
Why did you...
Why did you kill him?
I don't understand.

KYLO REN:
No? Your parents threw you away like garbage.

REY:
They didn't!

KYLO REN:
They did.
But you can't stop needing them.
It's your greatest weakness. Looking for them everywhere.... in Han Solo.... now in Skywalker.
Did he tell you what happened that night?

REY:
Yes.

KYLO REN:
No. He had sensed my power, as he senses yours.
And he feared it.

REY:
Liar.

KYLO REN:
Let the past die.
Kill it if you have to.
That's the only way to become what you were meant to be.

REY:
No! No!

FEMALE VOICE:
Rey?

REY:
I should have felt trapped or panicked. But I didn't.
This didn't go on forever, I knew it was leading somewhere.
And that, at the end, it would show me what I came to see.

FEMALE VOICE:
Rey.

REY:
Let me see them. My parents... please.

I thought I'd find answers here.
I was wrong. I've never felt so alone

KYLO REN:
You're not alone.

REY:
Neither are you.

LUKE:
Rey?

REY:
It isn't too late.

LUKE:
Stop!

REY:
It is True?
Did you try to murder him?

LUKE:
Leave this island now!

REY:
Stop. Stop! Did you do it?
Did you create Kylo Ren?
Tell me The Truth.

LUKE:
I saw darkness. I'd sensed it building in him.
I'd see it at moments during his training.
But then I looked inside...
and it was beyond what I ever imagined.

Snoke had already turned his heart.
He would bring destruction, and pain, and death...
and the end of everything I love because of what he will become.

And for the briefest moment of pure instinct... I thought I could stop it.
It passed like a fleeting shadow.

And I was left with shame... and with consequence.
And the last thing I saw... were the eyes of a frightened boy whose master had failed him.

Ben, no!

REY:
You failed him by thinking his choice was made.
It wasn't.
There is still conflict in him.
If he turned from the dark side, that could shift the tide.

This could be how we win.

LUKE:
This is not going to go the way you think.

REY:
It is. Just now, when we touched hands...
I saw his future. As solid as I'm seeing you.
If I go to him, Ben Solo will turn.

LUKE:
Rey... don't do this.

REY:
Then he is Our Last Hope.

LUKE:
Master Yoda.

YODA:
Young Skywalker.

LUKE:
I'm ending all of this.
The tree, the text, the Jedi.
I'm going to burn it down.

YODA:
Hmm. (laughs)
Ah, Skywalker, missed you, have I.

LUKE:
So it is time for the Jedi Order to end.

YODA:
Time it is.
For you to look at a pile of old books, hmmm?

LUKE:
The sacred Jedi texts!

YODA:
Oh. Read them, have you?

LUKE:
Well, I...

YODA:
Page-turners they were not.
Yes, yes, yes.
Wisdom they held, but that library contained nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess.
Skywalker, still looking to The Horizon.
Never here, now, hmmm?
(pokes Luke with his walking stick
The need in front of your nose. Hmmm?

LUKE:
I was weak. Unwise.

YODA:
Lost Ben Solo, you did.
Lose Rey, we must not.

LUKE:
I can't be what she needs me to be.

YODA:
Heeded my words not, did you?
Pass on what you have learned. Strength, Mastery.

But Weakness, Folly, Failure, also.
Yes, failure most of all.
The greatest teacher, failure is.

Luke, we are What They Brow Beyond.
That is The True Burden of All Masters.

LONELINESS

Mortal :
If You were gonna DO something,
you shoulda done it when we NEEDED You!
Where were you THEN?
 Huh?

God :
I Was Dead.

Mortal :
Yeah, well...
Maybe so...
But you still shoulda DONE somethin’!

Tony,

I'm glad you're back at the compound.

I don't like the idea of you rattling around a mansion by yourself.

We all need Family.
The Avengers are yours.
Maybe more so than mine.

I've been on my own since I was 18.

I never really fit in anywhere, even in the army.

My faith's in People, I guess. Individuals.

And I'm happy to say that, for the most part, they haven't let me down.

Which is why I can't let them down either.

Locks can be replaced, but maybe they shouldn't.

I know I hurt you, Tony.

I guess I thought by not telling you about your parents I was sparing you, but I can see now that I was really sparing myself, and I'm sorry.

Hopefully one day you can understand.

I wish we agreed on the Accords, I really do.

I know you're doing what you believe in, and that's all any of us can do.

That's all any of us should.

So no matter what, I promise you, if you need us…

If you need me…

I'll be There.

ALL PROBLEMS ARE INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS

YOUTH: Wait a minute! I’m supposed to just let that one slip by?

‘To get rid of one’s problems, all one can do is live in the universe all alone?’

What do you mean by that? If you lived all alone, wouldn’t you be horribly lonely?

PHILOSOPHER:
Oh, but being alone isn’t what makes you feel lonely.

Loneliness is having other people and society and community around you,
and having a deep sense of being excluded from them.

To feel lonely,
we need other people.

That is to say, it is only in social contexts that a person becomes an ‘individual’.

YOUTH: If you were really alone, that is, if you existed completely alone in the universe, you wouldn’t be an individual and you wouldn’t feel lonely, either?

PHILOSOPHER: I suppose the very concept of loneliness wouldn’t even come up.

You wouldn’t need language, and there’d be no use for logic or commonsense, either.

But such a thing is impossible.

Even if you lived on an uninhabited island, you would think about someone far across the ocean. Even if you spend your nights alone, you strain your ears to hear the sound of someone’s breath.

As long as there is someone out there somewhere, you will be haunted by loneliness.

YOUTH: But then, you could just rephrase that as ‘if one could live in the universe all alone, one’s problems would go away’, couldn’t you?

PHILOSOPHER: In theory, yes. As Adler goes so far as to assert, ‘All problems are interpersonal relationship problems.’

YOUTH: Can you say that again?

PHILOSOPHER: We can repeat it as many times as you like: all problems are interpersonal relationship problems. This is a concept that runs to the very root of Adlerian psychology.

If all interpersonal relationships were gone from this world, which is to say if one were alone in the universe and all other people were gone, all manner of problems would disappear.

YOUTH: That’s a lie! It’s nothing more than academic sophistry.

PHILOSOPHER: Of course, we cannot do without interpersonal relationships.

A human being’s existence, in its very essence, assumes the existence of other human beings.

Living completely separate from others is, in principle, impossible. As you are indicating, the premise ‘if one could live all alone in the universe’ is unsound.

YOUTH: That’s not the issue I am talking about.

Sure, interpersonal relationships are probably a big problem. That much I acknowledge.

But to say that everything comes down to interpersonal relationship problems, now that’s really an extreme position.

What about the worry of being cut off from interpersonal relationships, the kind of problems that an individual agonises over as an individual; problems directed to oneself.

Do you deny all that?

PHILOSOPHER: There is no such thing as worry that is completely defined by the individual; so-called internal worry does not exist.

Whatever the worry that may arise, the shadows of other people are always present.

YOUTH: But still, you’re a philosopher. Human beings have loftier, greater problems than things like interpersonal relationships.

What is happiness, what is freedom?

And what is the meaning of life?

Aren’t these the themes that philosophers have been investigating ever since the ancient Greeks?

And you’re saying, so what?

Interpersonal relationships are everything?

It seems kind of pedestrian to me.

It’s hard to believe that a philosopher would say such things.

PHILOSOPHER: Well, then, it seems there’s a need to explain things a bit more concretely.

YOUTH: Yes, please do! If you’re going to tell me that you’re a philosopher, then you’ve got to really explain things, or else this makes no sense.

PHILOSOPHER: You were so afraid of interpersonal relationships that you came to dislike yourself.

You’ve avoided interpersonal relationships by disliking yourself.

These assertions shook the youth to his very core.

The words had an undeniable truth that seemed to pierce his heart.

Even so, he had to find a clear rebuttal to the statement that all the problems that people experience are interpersonal relationship problems. Adler was trivialising people’s issues.
The problems I’m suffering from aren’t so mundane!

He had sensed my power,
as he senses yours.

And he feared it.

REY:
Liar.

KYLO REN:
Let The Past Die.
Kill it, if You Have to.

That's the only way to become
What You Were Meant to Be.

REY:
No! No!

FEMALE VOICE:
Rey?

REY:
I should have felt trapped or panicked.

But I didn't.

This didn't go on forever,
I knew it was leading somewhere.

And that, at The End,
it would show me what I came to see.

FEMALE VOICE:
Rey.

REY:
Let me see them.
My parents... please.

I thought I'd find answers here.
I was wrong.
I've never felt so alone

KYLO REN:
You're not alone.

REY:
Neither are you.

LUKE:
Rey?

REY:
It isn't too late.

LUKE:
Stop!

REY:
It is True?
Did you try to murder him?

LUKE:
Leave this island now!

REY:
Stop. Stop!
Did you do it?
Did you create Kylo Ren?

Tell Me The Truth.

LUKE:
I saw darkness.
I'd sensed it building in him.
I'd see it at moments during his training.

But then I looked inside...
And it was beyond what I ever imagined.
Snoke had already turned his heart.

He would bring destruction, and pain, and death... and The End of Everything I Love
because of What He Will Become.

And for the briefest moment of pure instinct...
I thought I could stop it.

It passed like a fleeting shadow.
And I was left with shame...
and with consequence.

And the last thing I saw
were the eyes of a frightened boy,
whose Master had failed him.

Ben, no!

REY:
You failed him by thinking his choice was made -

Luke, we are what they grow beyond.
That is the true burden of all masters.
